Question:
Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and obesity
Hi, I've had PCOS for years and have had to take hormonal supplements to menstruate at all. I was told that if the uterus is not flushed out every 90 days you're at high risk for uterine cancer. Anyway, I am 11 weeks postop and just started my first non-pill induced menstruation in about five years! I can't believe it! I hope that this is a sign that as I lose weight the PCOS will abate. I hope I'm not grossing anyone out with this topic, but this syndrome is described as being both caused by obesity or obesity causes the syndrome, they're not quite sure. Anyway, boy was I surprised! If anyone else has PCOS and is pre or post-op, don't hesitate to write. — Elizabeth M. (posted on May 11, 2000)

I too suffer from this. I do not know alot about the disease except I am
almost certain, without doubt, that this condition has attributed to my
obesity. I hve not menstruated for about seven years. When I have, it was
due to medication the dr has given me. I would like to know any other
information you may have on this condition.

I too have this problem. In fact my pcp wanted me to have a hysterectomy
before I had my surgery. My problem was when I bleed I kept bleeding for
six weeks to two months non stop and when I didn't bleed, I didn't bleed
for about six weeks.I went to see my gyn and she said that she was going to
try me on some hormones pill to help clean the lining of my uterus out. I
havent' started on the pills yet but I will next month. She told me that
she wanted me to lose before she tried to give me a hysterectomy.

I, too, had pcos and infertility pre-op. My surgeon told me he would only
do my surgery if I agreed to take birth control for 1 year post-op. I did
it even though I had been infertile for 15 years due to PCOS and had never
had regular periods. I would go years with out one, then I would have one
that would last for months and have to be stopped either mecically with
drugs or a D&C. When I reached my 1 year anniversary, I stopped taking
the pill because I considered it a waste of money for one thing, and only
took them because my surgeon had insisted. I immediately, The first month,
became pregnant!!! I am now due in 2 weeks and have never been so happy or
lucky. During that first year I lost 155 pounds and was 50 pounds from goal
when I got pregnant. I had a VBG and am now 22 months post-op. Good Luck!!
My PCOS is gone and all due to my weight loss. Also, during the year
post-op, I had a regular period every month. It was not heavy or gruesome
like it used to be. Very light and regular, no pains at all.

I have PCOS and yes, I am hoping for a full recovery after the surgery.
This thing about cancer has been stressed to me also. I am glad to see a
fellow sufferer who has hope!
