Question:
Anyone know about Ileal Bypass?

Has anyone heard of Ileal Bypass? My Dr. is conferring with another Dr. about this due to past medical problems. He states this will help the triglycerides from being absorbed to stop me from getting Pancreatitis again. Wondering if the same as jj-ileum bypass.    — CohenHeart (posted on February 29, 2000)

I know nothing on this surgery actually this is the only information I have on it and that is not much.. maybe the house doctors can answer this better.. (Jejuno-ileal Bypass) This operation is of historic importance. This prototypical malabsorbtive procedure was performed from 1963 to 1980. The amount of small intestine in contact with food was severely shortened. Although this procedure was quite simple to perform, the metabolic complications were devastating. Protein-calorie malabsorbtion, diarrhea, vitamin and mineral deficiencies were common. In addition, kidney failure has been seen in patients ten years out from surgery. It is because of this failed procedure, that many physicians and insurance companies look down on all bariatric procedures.

I have the jejunoileal bypass (intestinal) in 1979...which is more than 20 years ago now. I know that the Good Lord has been watching over me and helping me to keep healthy as I'm doing okay and not had it "reconnected." The main problem I have is bacterial overgrowth in the blocked off intestine. It causes arthritic symptoms and sometimes I even break out in a rash around my joints. It has been controlled by Flagyl antibiotic over the years. The problem has increased in 2000 and I am currently taking the Flagyl and acidophilus to try to get my system back "right." I also have to take 600mg potassium supplement 3x day since the malabsorption drains the body of potassium. I recently had an upper GI series and a visit with a gastroenterologist (is that how you spell it?) and my surgery looks fine. I also had a physical and things are looking good, overall. I feel very blessed. I am 45 years old. I would LOVE to hear from others who have had this kind of surgery so that I can compare notes/histories with them. I am so grateful also that I found this website this year.

I had the bypass surgery in the early 70s. I have been pretty much ok. I have been having arthritis symptoms,as well as a rash. I am just now realizing that it is connected to the surgery.I am looking for a doctor that knows about these things. I did some research and gave it to my doc. he said he didn`t have time to read it.I would be intrested to know what has been happening to you.
