YOU must follow your doctors advise. He is the only one u should be
listening to. Those of us that have had the surgery at this point in our
journey can make adjustments, but until you get out at least a year you
need to follow them. Why are you in such a hurry? You did not put all
this weight on in a month and for sure you will not take it off in a month.
I hope you are doing WLS for the right reasons. Remember this is going to
be a life long journey.

yes i am doing it for the right reason i was just needing to know if i am
doing right , because of what people around me have said and there has been
people here this morning that has help me with that and not have questioned
my goals and for why i done the surgery if you most know i had the sugery
done to feel better first and then to look better i know i can not do it in
a week or two and i know i didnt put it on in a week or to but thanks
anyway

I think the most important thing you can do is follow only your Dr.'s
instructions for what is allowed. Every Dr has his/her own idea on how
they want things to go. My sister had surgery over five years ago and I
had it five months ago.. it amazes me the difference of opinions between
the two surgeons.. but it is what my surgeon has instructed me to do that I
follow. I agree so much with the other poster.. weight didn;t come one
overnight and 27 pounds is such a great beginning.. hang in there remember
this is a lifetsyle change nothing tempoary about it at all.. before you
know it you will feel and look 100% better.. Hang on my friend... it is
going to be a hell of a ride!

Wow! Almost 30 pounds in a month...that's great! I understand how you
feel. I need to eat protein first always, but every "pure
protein" ie, fish, chicken, eggs...I try is soooo hard getting down.
Soups, and soft blended things are much easier.
How about try some cheeses, they are protein and soft, or cottage cheese,
plain yogurt with splenda, maybe avocado? Ask them if these things are OK,
they are all good protein sources, and easy to get down.
Hang in there!

Hi Angela, not drinking before or after eating was extremely hard for me in
the beginning also. I used to drink during my meals prior to WLS. It will
get easier and will become 'second nature', I promise : ) Have you asked
your surgeon when you can eat soft foods? Your surgeon probably wants you
to get used to getting protein first. All surgeon's have certain plans for
their patients to re-introduce food. Along with protein, two things that
worked for me to help the weight loss are drinking at least 64 ounces of
water and walking. I lost about 27 the first month like you and it kept
going down each month. I lost about 120 pounds in 5 months and have
maintained for about 3 months now. All my pain in my joints and back are
gone. Lupus is in remission. I feel young again. Just hang in there and
it will keep coming off. Talk to your doctor and ask them when or if you
can try mashed potatoes or applesauce. I am sure your motivation for WLS
is valid. I also was looking forward to feeling healthier but I also love
looking so much better too. You are doing a great job. It will come off.
I was impatient at times during my weight loss. I think it is part of
human nature to want it all off now. Now my goal is to keep up with
protein, water, and walking. I have worked on reframing food in my life.
I eat to live now. I used to live to eat. You are more than welcome (as
all are) to e-mail me if you want to ask questions or share whatever might
be going on. WLS is not for wimps. Take care. SMILE, Jenna

Aimee,
I would say the last poster is right about the bread in the beginning. But
as far as veggies (greenbeans) ect...is good for you. Meats, cheeses
definitly are VERY good for you they WILL NOT swell in your stomach. That
poster is wrong. however if you eat tio much of it it may cause you to feel
constipated. I have NEVER had that problem..I am 3 years out as of
yesterday. I have never regained any weight and am still losing. I just
recently had my tt and hernia repair. Please feel free to e-mail me if you
like. Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protien. Nuts, beef jerky
(soft kind) avacado, tuna, shrimp (boiled) canned chicken or boiled.there
are lots of Goood protein out there. I myself bought all the powders and
whatnot but it is still under my cabinet. I found it easier to eat the
food. And snack on protein when I want something else.

my 2 cents worth. I was told to have liquids for two weeks, very soft
foods for the next two weeks, and then soft foods for two weeks after that.
I did not have anything very solid until about two or three months after,
and that consisted of 1 tablespoon of mashed potatoes watered down like
crazy. I was not able to eat meat for almost 2 years, chicken is very hard
still (almost 3 years), and I never tried a salad for a year. Everyone is
different but most would agree that you should eat like a newborn baby.
They are not starte on "junior" semi-solids until they are about
six months. 27 pounds in one month is AWESOME. I did 11 to 13 pounds a
month, so 27 is pretty darn good if you ask me. Little by little I ended
up below my goal and lost 148.

Angela, wow what an array of answers to your question. What is important?
To listen to your surgeon and nutritionist....that's it. At the stage you
are on, please do not follow others post-op eating plans, your surgeon gave
you this plan for a reason. The 27 lbs loss in 4 weeks is great, think
about it that almost 1 lb per day, have you ever had this type of success
before? I can relate to the drinking situation, that was probably one of
the biggest things to get use to post-op, again there is a reason, with the
small quantity of food you are allowed and to maintain saiety, you
shouldn't drink, you want the food to remain in your pouch for as long as
possible. I promise you this, if you are conscious of what you eat and
follow your surgeon's goal, you will lose weight and be much healthier.
Best wishes ~~ Dana

of course do follow your doctors orders. Each doctor is different. Yes,
the not drinking during a meal hurts me too.
this is hard. But so far I am managing. Weight loss is different for
everyone. I am only one week out and have just lost 5 lbs. I really
thought It would be more. All I can say is keep drying. I am eating
pureed food. Anything I can put in a blender or liquids. I just want
something to eat..........
I will pray for you and you pray for me. All we have to do is get thru
this initial healing time.......we can do this............
Smile and keep trying...........Sounds like you are doing great.

First of all, you aren't missing anything by not having mashed potatoes
and applesauce. The best weight loss is achieved (at least initially) by
getting your body into ketosis-- you do that by restricting carbs (like
you'd find in applesauce and potatoes) and by increasing protein (so that
you lose fat not muscle mass).
Your surgeon appears to have you limited to foods that are unambiguously
high protein with next to no carbs. If the saltiness of the foods is
bothering you, think about soft-boiled, or soft scrambled, eggs, ricotta
and the Stallone puddings. Just remember to talk to your doctor (or his
staff) about the foods you want to incorporate. Good luck.

I am only 5 days post-op and on the same high protein diet
chicken, fish, cheeses and am having great success w/ about 1.5-2 oz per meal
and trying to get in liquid as well. I am supposed to be taking in 64 oz of
liquids per day, but i am getting about 40 oz at this point. your best bet
is to talk to your Dr. or his nurse or the nutritionist...to keep things
mixed up try different seasonings,etc...i like to use valsic sugar free
pickle relish in my chicken (like a super mini chicken salad) LOL
they also carry sugarless canola mayo that is not bad. 27 lbs in 4 weeks
sounds like you are doing great !!!! keep up the good work and don't
stress. I know we all want to eat right, but all of our doctors have
different suggestions to some varying degree...just think? when was the
last time you ate 1/4-1/2 C of food per sitting...i think you'll keep
losing. The reason for not drinking w/ meals is if you eat then drink you
will flush your food through which will cause you hunger earlier. I know
it's hard....i used to alway's drink and eat @ the same time. I just need
to keep my will-power in tact and time the intervals~i keep a food journal
and jot down what i eat & drink throughout the day...maybe this would
benefit you, and could also be used as a tool of reference when speaking to
the DR. Email if you'd like to talk
~Hope i helped a little-even though i am such a newbie :) LOL

Here are the most important reasons not to drink with your meals, according
to my nutritionist. 1)When you drink with your meals, the water washes the
food though your stomach and out into your intestines so quickly that you
get very little absorption of the nutrients. 2) Because it does that, you
can start having problems with hunger, and get into eating more than 3
meals a day- NOT a good habit! As for weight loss, I understand 25-30
pounds the first month is considered ideal! Good luck. Jenny1
