Question:
Post op, when you can get back in a routine, is it difficult?
Just a question, and it's not for 'just the guys',I've worked out with some amazing women in the gym, and they could put me to shame!, it's for anyone who considers themselves fairly strong before surgery. I know that I will be laid up for at least 4 weeks - and lots of little steps to get back into my routine of 20 miles a day on a bicycle, and a 30 min. machine workout. I realize that it will take quite a while, and when I was lifting competively, it was an accepted 'norm' that for every 'day' not lifting, your toll was a 'week' of workouts to regain former strength. I consider myself strong first, and fat second, (some people may argue that (smile;). I've always been the kind of guy that if I wasn't going to be the thin and trim type, I'll be the silent - strong type. I can keep myself busy with walking and such, so boredom is not going to be a question, but how hard was it to get back into a routine post surgery, at least back to an activity point that you were pre-surgery? — track (posted on September 1, 2003)

So much depends on whether you have open or LAP and whether everything goes
like clockwork. I cannot give you specifics but you will most likely
bounce back quickly because you are so much stronger and active before
surgery. That will carry you a long way. I am pretty much back to my
pre-surgery routine with lifting weights and am able to walk more. I'll be
7 months on Wed. However, I was never doing as much as you before surgery
and I have quite a few physical limitations from fibromyalgia. I just
cannot push my body as hard as someone else without actually setting myself
back, so I must go about it much slower.
<p>I also found that when I went back to working out with weights I
needed to add in a partial to full meal at night. I was so wiped out after
my workout that I sometimes barely had the energy to make it home. I was
totally spent. The extra protein did help. Good luck I'm sure you will be
back to normal before you know it. Oh one last thing, I'd plan on wearing
a waist support/binder when you go back to lifting so as not to end up with
a hernia.

I had open RNY on July 15th. Just had my 6th week check up and the doc said
I could do anything I wanted. The first 4 weeks were very rough on me and
to be honest I never thought I would feel good again but some where around
the 5th week it all came together and I have been feeling WONDERFUL and
feel like I can do anything, though the sit-ups are VERY difficult at this
point.
