Question:
How concerned should I be about ketoacidosis
I'm a former diabetic (non-insulin dependent, type 2). After my WLS, my surgeon took me off all of the diabetic medicines I was taking before. Now that I am focusing a lot on protein, water, etc., I'm concerned that the intake of over 60g of protein might cause some kidney problems or ketoacidosis or something. Should I be concerned about this since my "family" on this website has mentioned how important protein is...I'm finished taking diabetic medication for the rest of my life. Any suggestions? — yourdivaness (posted on January 30, 2003)

The post-op diet for WLS patients, that many docs use, is a lot like the
Atkin's diet-high protein\low carb. The important thing when you are in
ketosis and burning fat is:DRINK,DRINK,DRINK! At least 64 oz. of water a
day. If youu are drinking anything with caffeine you need to add that much
more water since it dehydrates you. The water helps flush the ketones from
your body. I am diabetic, was on Actos 45 mg, glyburide 20 mg and NPH(150U
daily) pre-op. After surgery, my endocrinologist had me continue monitoring
my blood sugar levels since they take a while to come down. The diabetes
does not instantly disappear. I took no insulin post-op and started back on
my meds when I got home on day 4. I then titrated them down according to my
blood sugars. I am now only taking glyburide 5 mg daily at night.(AM sugars
are 80-120) I will soon stop this and be off all meds. I am currently 4.5
months post-op. Do you have a good endocrinologist? They are the
specialists best suited to monitor diabetes. By the way, if you were to eat
more like you used to pre-op( say when you are several years down the road)
you might find your sugars up again.
I currently consume 60-80 grams of protein daily without any problems. My
doc checks my blood levels for kidneys etc every other month and they are
fine. Good monitoring post-op is essential.Good Luck!
