Question:
I am having Surgery right after X-mas ????

I am having surgery on December 31st, so its good time for me to ask for gifts that I will beable to use post-op. What kinds of things should I definately have? I think I should get a food chopper? Ice shaver? Also, what kinds of things should I have bought ahead of time as far as food? I need any and all advice. Thanks Kristie    — Kristie M. (posted on November 9, 2002)

A Blender that is my life savor. As far as food I wouldnt go over board but you will need Jello, SF Pop sicles I think those two along with your Fluids will help right after you get home, Also pudding Instant potatoes even baby food If you can tolerate that. This is just my idea since that is what I had to have the first few weeks. DOnt forget the carnation sf instant breakfast, yummy. Good Luck on your up coming surgery.

I use my immersion blender twice every day to make protein shakes (GNC vanilla whey mixed in oj tastes like a dreamsicle). Gift certificates would also be a great idea - your body will change very rapidly, and you will need new things. good luck!!

Just wanted to say congrats on your surgery date! I'm still waiting for mine and worried that I'd get a date right before Christmas and then what would I do. Since I'm pre-op don't have specific advise - but I think a blender would be a very nice thing to have.. Oh, tee hee, supposedly post op you are more sensitive to cold... maybe request some nice cozy gloves, scarf, mittens, hat, etc. Hugs! Wishing you all the best!

I am 11 months out and i still use my CORDLESS hand blender for a daily protein shake. Get a mini food chopper for tuna and egg salad etc. A ELECTRIC ice crusher. Instant potatoes - cream of wheat - I lasted 4 days on baby food meat and vegetables. I later learned that you can go on water only for a couple of weeks and nom harm done. Ditto protein. Per my surgeon. SF popsickels - I got calcium citrate gelcaps 1500 a day- not pills- at health food store. If calcium gelcaps seem to many to swallow per day - try for calcium citrate liquid or something. Not hard pills. Used Bugs Bunny chewables (not as strong as flintstones) or more chewable vitamin/mineral are out now at the drugstore. Maybe take pictures. I wish I had kept a journal - get ready for the ride of your life. We are so fortunate to have wls available. Wendy's chile in the food chopper after a week or two. Cheese scrambled eggs. Get a method going to measure the WATER you drink. I did not give up coffee or green tea (drink water first) - or chewing gum - and started sipping diet coke about 6 weeks out - very little. I would not do the gum until swelling was down for sure - 3 months?

My best item has been the Quick Shake container from Tupperware. I can mix shakes in them and put them in the refrigerator to be extra cold (it helps me get them down easier). They have a mixer in the container, so you don't need the hand held mixer to blend, just shake. It has the ounce measurements right on the side, so no need to worry about dirtying a measuring cup. It is also very easy to take a shake to go if I need to take one with me to work or to someones house. I mix my 16 ounces I need for the day, drink what I can, and then just pop back in the frig until I want more. Cleanup is easy in the dishwasher.

Make sure you have a heating pad. I had a pulled muscle from surgery and I think others had them too. I lived with mine for the first 3 weeks afterwards. P.S. Tupperware rocks!! I sell it! ;)

How about nice nightdress's (or moo-moo's) to wear home from the hospital or around the house the first few days and then at night. Something that doesn't have a waistband so it isn't rubbing on your incisions. Also, I have a battery powed turbo-shake mixer that I love. I picked it up at a rummage sale so I not sure where you would buy it but it is very convenient. And, small, 1/2 - 1 cup Tupperware/Rubbermaid containers. They are already measured so I know when I put pudding etc., in them I don't have to measure each one out. They are also great to take snacks in when you are not sure where you will be, such as raisins, soynuts, etc. (when you are farther post!). Good Luck!

The best thing I had for the hospital was a "sound therapy eye mask", from Brookstone, (www.brookstone.com) It is $40.00. It is an eye mask that has speakers in the part that covers your ears. It plays nature sounds, and comes with plugs to use a cd player with it too. If you don't have a cd player a small portable one, ask for that for Christmas too! And some relaxing cd's as well! This helped me to get some much needed quality rest in the noisy hospital, and I still use it when I want to sleep in and the sun is in my face! When I got home from the hospital, what I found very useful was a 2 ounce shot glass, with the ounces marked. this helps to drink the right amount, not too much! Good luck with your surgery!
