Question:
I am going on a cruise in 3 weeks I will be at 4 months post-op and want to drink.

I am going on a cruise and want to drink a drink or two and was wondering what everyone recommends. I hate beer!!! I know alcohol after surgery isnt good for you but I am 22 and going on a cruise. I like fruity drinks and was wondering if there were any lower in sugar.    — IamMrsMcDole (posted on October 13, 2008)

I occasionally will enjoy a Grey Goose Vodka and Diet Cranberry juice. Yummo! I have been known to carry a couple of individual sized Ocean Spray diet cranberry juices in my purse, order vodka on the rocks and somehow the juice shows up in it. I've never had anyone give me a hard time about it. Beware though that you will absorb the alcohol more rapidly than you used to so it will take less to feel the effects. Be careful. I also like Diet V8 Splash mixed berry blend. Very fruity and low carb. FYI: I am a lapbander so I look at carbs and not sugar grams so be sure to check that closely. Good luck and have fun, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I have a nephew that is 21 years old and he thought the same thing so he drank and ended up in the hospital for a week with 2 bleeding ulcers, so think about it before you drink. There is a reason the Dr. tells you not to drink

I went to Mexico 3-1/2 months post-op and I had 2 drinks in 2 days. And they were kahlua coladas. (like pina colada but with kahlua) Didn't effect me at all either weight loss wise or sobriety wise. I mean I didn't get a buzz and they sure were good! No regrets! But I would strongly suggest you limit yourself because alcohol causes dehydration and that's the last thing any of us need after wls! Have a blast!

I would have to say enjoy the cruise... you wouldn't want to get sick just because you drank alcohol, then not enjoy the rest of your cruise. Have fun on your trip. Caroline

I would not do it. I had 2 glasses of wine a few years back and had severe diarrhea at a wedding. It ruined the Wedding for me and I had stomach pain real bad and had to go lay down for the rest of the day. Good Luck. I hope you have a great cruise.

It might be too early for you to start drinking since you're only 4 mo post-op. Don't do it. If you get sick it will ruin your week. You don't need to drink to have a good time.

My cousin had RNY just over 3 years ago. At her bachelorette party last year, just over 2 years out, she had one shot and was buzzing pretty good!! About a half hour later, she was feeling clearer, and had another shot. In between the shots, she would drink water, and she was just fine. Just remember that you will get drunk faster than before surgery!! Be careful that you don't overindulge too quickly, and you will be just fine!! Have fun on your cruise!!

I'm 6 months out of gastric bypass and want to share my two experiences with drinks: I tried a pina coloda about two months ago and after drinking 2 oz had very bad dumping syndrome. I tried a fruity drink at a party two weeks ago and after 2 oz was drunk. Before my surgery I loved to kick back and drink a few in a row, but now its more scary than exciting. I'd rather drink water and not take a chance on being sick.

I'd say try a drink at home before you go out in public and try it! I had my one month post op check up and I asked the doctor about alcohol. He said to be careful because of the faster absorption, but if I wanted to have a glass of wine or something, to do it with food. I found this contradictory since I'm not supposed to drink while eating??? I'm going to be trying it this week. I'm heading to the virgin islands in 3 weeks and rum is the cheapest thing to drink there!

Go and have a great time. FYI I had open RNY and 4 months out I was on vacation and went out to dinner and had a couple of glasses of wine. I was fine that night but the next morning I had terrible diarrhea. So as some others have suggested..........try something at home first to see how your system is going to react. Becareful of the fruity drinks, because most of them are loaded with sugar or syrups.

Please be very careful about consuming alcohol. I am a four year post-op alcoholic. My doctor told me I could never drink again, but he didn't tell me why. Overeating is an addictive behavior. If you didn't receive adequate counciling (I didn't), then you may trade one adddiction for another. I'm battling for my life right now. I don't regret having the surgery, but my marriage and health is in jeopardy due to addiction transfer. There's a good article about it on ABC--type in Gastric Bypass and Alcoholism and it will come up. I hate to be a party pooper but I wish I had listened. Carnie Wilson experienced the same thing and talked about it on Oprah.

Try the low calorie FUSE drinks that are out now. Maybe they will have that or something like that on the cruise. Try to avoid alcohol especially if you have not tried it yet. I was told it would affect me to the extreme, even a teensy amount would cause a huge drunk!

I had Rny on 1/16/08 and went on a cruise in August. Trust me you will have a hard enough time with all that food. Why do you want to make things harder with alcohol. Don't think twice just say NO! You had this surgery for a reason!!

Why would you want to do that to your body? Stay away from it. You can have a good time still.

I am 5 months post-op and enjoy a good glass of wine every now and then with no issues. However, I drink white wine that is very dry so that there is a low sugar content. Maybe some dry white wine with sugar free fruit juice--sort of like a wine cooler?

I just got back from a cruise and drank vodka and water with lime or lemon. Very tasty and no problems at all. Of course I only had 1-2 drinks a day.

I liked one previous poster's idea about bringing the diet juice with you. In any case I would DEFINITELY try it at home first. I would hate for you to end up in the bathroom the whole night with the craps! Just be safe!

I am 8 months post op RNY. In August I drank maybe a half of an Apple Smirnoff in about 30-40 minutes and I felt very wierd. I felt a little buzzed but I also felt like my brain had electrical currents running through it. It didn't hurt but it was not a good feeling. I also felt as though I couldn't see straight. It was such a weird feeling that I have no desire to drink again. However, I'm not a drinker anyway. Good luck to you!

Hey there! congrats on having wls! congrats on getting to go on a cruise too! i am very excited for you! i am not here to agree of disagree with any other poster, this is just my experience. I had wls 4/24/06 and i drank not too long after that. i am NOT an alcoholic, but i do agree with the person that posted about alcoholism. have fun on your cruise, but be careful, you DO get drunk a lot, lot, lot, lot quicker! i found it fun, heck, it made me a cheap date X10!!! LOL- anyways, be careful that you dont over indulge, you could end up getting sick. i am not one, however, for fruity drinks, but i found that vodka w/diet mt dew (we call it 'anti-freeze' because of the color it is-just a fun bit of info) tasted great, and because its a mixed drink, it didnt effect me extremely fast. if it had been straight shots of vodka, it would have got me drunk in a quick hurry though. anyways, good luck!!! HAVE FUN!!!!! let us know how your cruise goes. please, try to enjoy being 22 and celebrate your 'new lease on life' (feel free to email me if you want @ [email protected] if you want to chit-chat. you may end up getting hell from some ppl on here for even requesting ANYTHING about drinking, i am not one of those ppl though. i know what its like to be young and want to have a good time :P i like to drink occasionally and dont want to get chewed out for it, i was lucky enough to have someone my age post their email addy also if i had any other Q's so i could talk to them without persecution) God Bless! -Stephanie @ -133# weighing in at 179# on a good day :P
