Question:
Surgeon recommends Optifast...I wanna save $$$ - How's Unjury?
I need to save money. The surgeon promotes Optifast which is fine. However, their "store" also sells Unjury, etc. Anyone else's thoughts on the comparison of Optifast and Unjury would be greatly appreciated!! — Melissa_B. (posted on July 26, 2008)

Is this for the 3 weeks prior to surgery or a 6 month duration wt loss
program? Optifast is what my insurance program requires for pre ops to
take during their wt loss program that is 5-6 months duration. Did you ask
you surgeon why he wanted Optifast? Or if Unjury was satisfactory to use
too. Remember, you have to take supplements the rest of your life, and
there is a monthly expense involed here. But if you were the type to go to
fast food places frequently, you'll probably end up saving money by not
going there as often, even figuring the added expense of supplements. Don't
skimp on $$ to avoid taking supplements. Life long health issues can occur
if you avoid taking vitamins and calcium citrate. DAVE

Do exactly what your surgeon recommends, he must have a good reason for his
choices. You are going to have to commit to expenses for life and suck it
up. I didn't have to do either one because I was a self pay, so, try to
keep it all in perspective.
Good luck,

Hi Melissa
You could ask your surgeon, or the dietitian in the surgeon's office
whether it is an acceptable alternative. You would use UNJURY along with a
complete multivitamin, as part of the UNJURY PRE-SURGICAL DIET.
If the dietitian or surgeon wishes, they can contact us for information
about presurgical results using this plan.
Kind regards
Jerome
UNJURY (R) Protein

If you have a problem with digestion of protein, let me save you some PAIN
by recommending LACTAID chewable tablets taken after a few sips of the
liquid shake whichever your surgeon recommends or his nutritionist. I have
used UNJURY and it is delicious, but, I must use LACTAID chews to prevent
constitipation from lactose intolerance. You are on a journey and your
guide is your surgeon. I had my (self-paid) gastric bypass 17 mos. ago and
started 2/12/07 (surgery date) at 259 and today I weigh 138. If you wish
to email me, my email is: [email protected]. Take care and never look in
the rear view mirror of your life....you will do well.

Sounds like you can do the cost comparison yourself if they sell UNJURY
too. Also can look at UNJURY on line to compare. Optifast comes in single
servings and you can get UNJURY in a multiuse container so that may effect
the price. For me, taste wise, the UNJURY was king!

If you have the trust in your doictor to allow him/her to do major life
changing surgery on you, use what he recommends they do alot more of these
procedures and know whats best. Good luck..

I believe that, of all the things I save money on, my nutrition is the last
thing I'd want to compromise. I use a different protein shake than either
of those, and I feel it's superior in every way, but that's my opinion. My
whole family uses what most would call "supplements" but what I
look at as our basic nutritional "insurance" in this depleted
world. Sometimes I tell people to be sure they're treating themselves as
well as they would a racehorse they hoped to make money from over the
years. Would you "save $$$" by feeding an income-producing animal
inferior foods? Probably not... because you're investing in the animal for
YOUR future. Go for the best you can find, and do your research. As far as
I know, there are more than two choices out there. My success, and the
success of hundreds of people I know, didn't include the two brands you
mentioned, and some included surgery but the majority did not.

Sorry, I had the Chocolate and Strawberry samples from Vitalady and poured
them both out--they were much too sweet and the strawberry tasted worse
than Koolaid. Even my husband thought they were awful. But I highly
recommend their chicken soup. The service is great and people are really
nice. The chicken soup afterwards doesn't have a huge amount of proteing,
but it sure was nice not to have something sweet once in awhile during the
1st week afterwards, when my surgeon wanted me to drink 5 drinks/day. These
consisted of 1 teaspoon protein to 1 oz water.
Definitely talk to your surgeon about the money issues. I'd bet he has had
people ask before. I asked if I could use Isopure because that's what I had
and he said "sure."
I have Lean Dessert Cinnamon something and Isopure Vanilla that I mix
together and add a pump of sugar free vanilla syrup to and it's great. I
had My surgeon suggested Procomplex. We bought some one the way home from
Vitamin Shoppe and it wasn't bad. My husband went in and bought the GIANT
Jug--I mean GIANT. It has 54 single scoop servings at 30 gr protein/scoop
and was $60. The only reason I stopped and got it was because of the
protein amount.

I would suggest discussing this with your surgeon, particularly your
concerns about money. Unjury and Optifast are not the same thing at all
and are used for different reasons. Unjury is a protein supplement that is
used in addition to a regular diet to increase protein intake. You still
eat regular food. Optifast (shakes, bars, and soups) is meant to take the
place of your regular diet. It's used as part of a medically supervised
very low calorie diet and has all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in
it that you body needs. Generally, someone on Optifast does not eat any
other food. Unjury supplements what you normally eat and Optifast replaces
what you normally eat.
Talk to your surgeon about it, maybe you can find an affordable middle
ground between the two.
Good luck.
