Question:
HI, I m 5 mths out and lost 127lbs already. Feel on top of this world.

I have been burning alot of calories everyday in the gym like around 600 c everyday and my intake of food is mostly all protein and fiber but not more than 800-900c . Now i feel that i have lost all the weight i wanted to loose but i m scared to go back on maintain mode. I think i m done with loosing mode. But i am scared that my weight will come on back once i start going on maintain mode. So that bothers me alot. ANy suggestions would be great. I was thinking to opt for couple of cheat days every two weeks and for the rest of the days i will follow protien, fiber and low carb diet as said above. Plz let me know if u guys think that following this kind of above diet with exercise be right or wrong? Thanks alot in advance.    — mrjack (posted on August 27, 2007)

Congrats on the weight loss! You must first figure out how you put the weight on in the begining. If it came from over eating or "cheating", then if I were you I wouldn't even temp myself w/ "Cheat Days". There is nothing wrong w/ having foods that you like, but the key is MODERATION. I am 3 months out and I've lost 58lbs so far. I figured out that I probaly won't have a problem w/ Dumping (which scares me), so I know there are some things that I just better stay away from. You've come far in a short period of time. You can have foods that you like, if you continue to go to the gym and exercise. Pace yourself and start building muscle. Remember to stay focused!

Congrats on your progress! I think you are burning too many calories right now. You are probably "malnourished" after subtracting the calories you burn from what you are eating. I would tone down the exercise and eat a little more often or better yet, consult your nutritionist for a maintenance program. I too fear gaining weight back but find that after 9 months if I still keep up my exercise routine at the gym (sometimes 200 c, other days using machines), and eating more carbs, I can maintain or even still lose a few ozs. a week. You need to weigh yourself 2x a week and watch portion sizes. Don't cheat every few weeks, allow yourself a 100-200 cal. snack every day. for me its popcorn, sf ice cream with sf syrup, sf pudding with cool whip, etc. You are still in a losing mode so don't worry about gaining. Stay away from sugar and refined carbs, cut down the exercise and you'll be fine!

Congrats on your WL...that's awesome...good for you. I am just over 6months and down 115lbs. I too, am at goal and started to eat to maintain, add more calories. WELL...I started to lose more quickly. I lost 8lbs in one week. It went into hyperdrive. Since then, it's back to normal weight lose 1-2lbs a week. But now...I am below my goal and started to freak out. I am keep a food journal and seeing my NUT this Friday. If you want the food journal, email me and I will send it to you ([email protected]). I am keeping track for 2 weeks then seeing her. Maybe do the same. They say they can help when they know exactly what you are eating (cal/carb/fat/protein) and exercising and drinking. Good luck to you....and to me!!

It really is a balancing act. You do the math.....It takes anywhere from 1300-1900 cal a day to just exsist, not to mention exersice......if you are burning 600 extra and eating only 900 and have no fat stores left...........the body will get its nutrition from somewhere......after a while your body does need carbs, a person will loose mental function without it. Folate and other very important elements are vital for maximum health.......everything in moderation. Seek a dietician or nutritionalist to aide in finding your balance and way to go on your huge success.

Great weight loss - did you have gastric bypass or lab band - my weight loss has been sooooo much slower - you are doing great - but I do understand your feelings - I could always loose the weight - keeping it off - was my problem - I agree with others - look at the positives you've already achieved. !!!

I don't know you personally, but for me, this would not work. On a cheat day, I could easily see myself thinking, "gee, this is a reward for all the good eating I've done" and end up eating so much junk that it would undo any of the good I did with the 2 weeks of healthy eating. If I don't allow myself certain foods, then I want them even more and when I do end up eating them, I have way too much because I know I won't be able to have it again until the next "cheat day" comes around. Eating four 1/2 cup servings of Ben and Jerry's ice cream over 2 weeks is better for you than eating a pint all at once (1 pint = 2 cups). Even tho the total amount of calories and ice cream are the same, blood sugar wise, it is much better to have the four 1/2 cup servings... The bottom line is that if you are on such a strict diet that you feel the need to have cheat days, then I think you re-consider the diet. You want to develop new life-time eating skills that will follow you for the rest of your life... having "cheat" days makes it seem like this short term "diet" for weight loss rather than a new way of life.
