Question:
when figuring your bmi-does the surgeon go by your weight only?
The reason that i ask this is----i am 293 pounds, and approx 5'10 or 5'11. I am 100 pounds overweight (PER THE WEIGHT CHART). i AM SUPPOSE TO BE 152-162 POUNDS. Has anyone had any issues with this same situation? Or can someone enlighten me on what the surgeon looks for---to determine if you are a candidate to have the surgery done. Thank you to anyone that can shed some light on this for me:) — bmw (posted on December 28, 2005)

It is a formula that is used based on your weight and height.

i think theres a BMI calculator on this site... if not go to google and
type in bmi and it gives you calculators.. and type in your height and
weight and ti gives you your bmi if its over 40 you automatically qualify..
if its under 35 you have to have other issues... thats what i was told

According to the BMI calculator on this site, if you are 5'10 and weigh 293
your BMI is 42. If you are 5'11 at the same weight your BMI is 40.8. The
surgeon isn't actually the one to determine if you qualify, it is your
insurance company. Look into their requirements. Typically, with either one
of these numbers, you would qualify.
