Question:
Anyone heard of lap band done after failure of rny?

Hi I had surgery in 2002. Lost about 80 lbs. and needed to lose about 100 more. Stopped losing, could always eat more than norma. Gained weight back, had x rays and endoscopy done but wasn't really told anything definitive. Dr. Miles said that studies had shown that people with a pouch size of up to 9 oz could still lose weight but didn't say that mine was that large. I called his office to ask about maybe having lap band to get my pouch to a smaller size, but the lady who answered the phone said no, that they don't do lap band after rny because the stomach couldn't tolerate it. Does anybody know why? Since then, I've talked to some people who have had this recommendation from their surgeon. I'm confused and feel like a failure, a really big one.    — cleo718 (posted on November 2, 2005)

yes I have heard of this. I think that our Dr. George Fielding might have done it before. He is with NYU in New York. It's Dr. Fielding & Dr. Ren. Ck them out

Dpn't feel like a failure. Most surgeons don't tell us that the first two years is the "window" for losing the most weight. Maybe you can reevaluate your exercise program and your eating habits. Remember protein first, no water half hour before and after eating, but drink at least 64 oz (suggested). huugzz hang in there, you are not alone in this.

Sure, there's a lady who used to post on the Band board here that had it done. Try not to be so hard on yourself. There is an answer out there for you, and you'll find it.

Original poster here. Thank you all for answering. I have been depressed so long, I have a hard time with this feeling of failure. But as a friend of mine said last week, "you'll come up with something, I know you won't give up". Thanks for your time and your answers.

Would you blame yourself for a flat tire? Mechanical failure of our surgery is the same thing. I know my doc will not do band over RNY, even tho they've done lots of bands. His thinking is that once the tissue has compromised (relaxed), to apply a band would be asking for trouble. His experience has showed him that the band will slip and erode on an RNY. Of the cases I've known to do this (elsewhere, not my doc), at the 2 yr mark, the rate of erosion is pretty high. But you asked why they said no, and that's what my doc said. Basically, once the tissue is compromised, it will compromise again. Again, NOT YOUR FAULT.

I see that you've already had a revision to an original gastric surgery done in 1981...then in 2002? That may be part of the problem, I don't know if a surgeon will re-operate, again? Beth http://meltingmama.blogspot.com

Yes a lapband can be put on after an RNY. I was one of the first to have it done. Not all doctors can/ or will do it. Mine was put on for a failed stoma; not pouch size. You can always loose; but even with the lapband its 'diet' the lapband will restrict your intake but depending on what you eat will depend on sucess. If you have alot to loose; you may want to look into a DS revision first over the lapband.

There are people who've had multiple revisions--three or even more. But the circumstances are so individual and varied that it would be impossible to determine here what might work for you. There are many people facing your dilemma. Please check out this web site--http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WLSrevisionsupport--for some helpful discussion and ideas and possible solutions. Best of luck.

I followed the rules (limited though they were) and like you did not lose close to my goal. I am researching trying to find a solution. Don't beat up on yourself because there are many of us out there like you. I know that is not much comfort but we can support each other. Some patients lost their weight effortlessly, some lost slowly but they lost and some of us are just not that lucky. I am now researching a revision which I only recently learnt about. Diets are only making me gain like they did before WLS. I think WLS is still the best option but as with everything in life there are exceptions or complications and some of us have to be in those groups. Don't let it deter you from succeeding. I read your profile. Please do not give up. Good luck.
