Question:
Does anyone have a scar like this?
I am post op 11 months. I have what the dr. calls a keloid scar. Part of my scar is just a thin line. The middle part of my scar is real thick. It is still a little tender when I touch it. It is ok according to the dr. I was just wondering if anyone else had one and did it eventually shrink down some or if you know of any treatment that would make it smaller. I don't mind the the length of the scar it's just that it does still feel a little tender sometimes. thanks for any info. — taterbug898 (posted on October 21, 2005)

I have one at the top of my scar. My doc says it happens sometimes. Mine is
red, raised, and is sometimes tender but not really that much anymore.
Although it is really sensative to sunlight or chemicals. So no two piece
swimsuits for me! My surgeon said it is easly fixed with a surgical scar
revision but we are holding off until I know what plastic surgery route
that I am going. I am almost 10 months out.

Hi There!
I did NOT have a keloid scar with my RNY but I did have one when my
gallbladder was removed in 1991. Mine was raised, red, a little tender and
itched something awful. My surgeon at the time did a steroid injection
(Which didn't hurt since it was injected straight into the scar tissue) And
within a week it was almost completely flat. It healed so nicely that it
was barely noticable. the scar turned to the same color as my
"WHITE" belly and it blended rather well I think. Good luck to
you.

I had a bad one from WLS. It looked like a purple nightcrawler.
It really looked bad and was raised high and thick. THANKFULLY, for some
reason, it is mostly gone now. It took 3-4 years. It is still a bit thicker
than normal, but pink now.
Perhaps you will get lucky too. It takes time.

Hi there! Luckly I had to have stitches a couple years ago on my hand and
formed a keloid on my thumb. After I had two c-sections and the ob/gyn gave
me special stitches so a keloid would not form. So my surgeon is going to
do the same.
My keloid on the thimb was tender for a long time when I touched it....like
for two years. But thebumpy part has gone flat now, the read has turned to
a little bit of a lighter shad than my skin color and now you can harfly
notice it. It took about 4 years for it to get to this point, but i didn't
use any special ointment or anything on it. As far as my
c-sections.....Dr's can't even tell I had two of them! So good luck and
don't worry they will get better :)

I have not had the WLS as yet (still praying for insurance to make a way)
however, I do have such a scar from having a C-section. That was over 28
years ago. All I can tell you as a word of encouragement is THANK God for
clothes (smile).

Please see a dermatologist for this. I know surgeons can fix them, but
they are often not as sensitive, or take it personally or something. A
keloid can burn, itch, hurt, crack and bleed or become infected. There are
some topical treatments you can try (rx) and I think I tried them all, but
getting the injections finally took it down. I used Scargo to fade the
color and shots took almost all the "rope" out of it. We had
treated my original WLS scar, and TT scar and had them all nice and clean
and I had to have a revision. sigh. So, we were waiting for it at 5 wks
and started injecting then. The shots are just the needle, the medicine
doesn't burn and they're fast. It was well worth to me to go "ow, ow,
ow" for a moment than to hurt all the time. I got initial relief
within 24 hours, but we continued the shots til the rope was gone

I wonder if Mederma would lighten up your scar. It costs around $14 for a
small tube. People say it works wonders and you don't need a
prescription.

I have this same problem. As an African-American, I am prone to keloid
scarring. I have 2 scars that are raised and very unattractive. One even
itches terribly and is still tender to touch at times. My surgeon also
said it was ok and to rub it (LOL! what was that going to do?!?!?) I
found a bandage made by Neo-sporin that has Silicone in it. It's used to
help improve the appearance of scars including keloids. It's $32 at the
pharmacy, but Walmart sells it for $28. Read the directions, but I think
you use the bandages for 12 weeks. The bandages can be cut to size so they
will last longer. But the good news is, they work! Check for a Neo-sporin
website and tell them you heard about the bandage and would like a sample
or a coupon to try it before you buy it. It's working for me!

I did not really keyloid except for my uppermost lap scar which was only
1/2" long. After my TT though, my PS suggested laser treatments to
lighten that scar as well as my TT and other RNY scars. I was not ever
going to wear a bikini, but I figured why not give it a shot. It took about
3 or 4 treatments to see any difference, but now the little keyloid is the
same color as my skin, and is not as raised. Before you all jump on me, my
PS is family and treated my scars at no cost. I would never be so vain as
to do such a thing otherwise. It did work though, so if you ARE in pain or
some discomfort, it might be worth discussing with a dermatologist or PS.
