Question:
Has anyone eaten popcorn?
I am a little shy of 2 months post-op, I had the RNY gastric bypass and I crave popcorn. I was told or heard someone say that you are never suppose to eat popcorn. What is the insight on this and has anyone had popcorn? Thank you in advance. — mriles (posted on July 14, 2009)

I am 15 months post op RNY and I eat popcorn 2 times a week. The 100
calorie pack.. I know your not supposed to. But I chew it very well.. You
being 2 months out though I don't know. I just started this about a month
ago..Two months seems too early to me.. My surgeon would probably have a
heart attack if he knew...I only eat about half of it anyway..Sorry I don't
have an answer for you..

At 2 months out, your pouch isn't healed all the way, or at least not
enough to eat popcorn. If you can, wait a lot longer to eat it. I eat it
myself but I am 3.5 yrs out and I found myself waiting for about one year
out to eat it.

I am six weeks post-op RNY and I too eat the small 100 cal. bags. As a
matter of fact I just ate one bag before I logged in.

I am popcorn addict. Life without popcorn hmm. I gave up chips and stuff
like that. How do we give up our popcorn hmm. Guess this is good question
for my dietician when i see her a few days before my surgery which is on
July 28.

Hi. I can not speak for folks with other surgeries but I had the
"sleeve" done 8 months ago and I can eat air popped pop corn in
moderation. I also use a flavor I shake on it which I found on the popcorn
isle in SuperWalmart.

I did try popcorn abot 6 months after RNY. I ended up having terrible acid
reflux so I stopped.

I too eat popcorn after surgery. the differance is I eat a single piece in
a couple bits. It must be chewed well. Only a handful for a serving early
on. It is a poor choice since it has not nutritional value. It does give
you fiber, but lots of salt as well. I eat it rarely but have had no
trouble with it.

I had popcorn the first time at about 3 months out, but I had very little.
I have had popcorn recently (now at 10 months out) and eaten a smaller
serving bag - no problems.

I had RNY and I eat Orville Redenbackers microwave popcorn every evening
with no problem. I am 11 months out. I buy the 94% fat free. I like the
Kettle Corn because it isn't so salty. No problems, but eat slowly. I am
also a popcorn addict. It's my one vice yet. Good luck and remember to
chew and eat slowly. Good luck.

My surgeon, Dr. Michael Snyder in Denver, says absolutely NO WHITE CARBS -
including pasta, potatoes, bread, rice, popcorn, grits, etc. So, I've
respected his requirements and not had any of those things.

Every surgeon and NUT is different. I eat popcorn. I eat the 100 calorie
small bag pack. I eat a 1/2 bag normally. Sometimes I eat the whole bag. I
normally get the Orville Redenbocker fat free 100 calorie - regular flavor.
I have it one to three times a week. I love popcorn - always have - always
will. I would die if I had to give IT up as well. We give up a lot for this
surgery. I am not sure if I could live without popcorn. They took away soda
(which I really don't miss), ice cream (which I really don't miss - I get
frozen yogart) and cookies and cakes and pies and etc. Good luck with your
new adventure. OH.. I didn't have any popcorn until I was about 8 months
out. I made sure I was good and healed.

i am almost 2yrs out and i eat popcorn too without any problems. at 2 mo
out i wouldn't try it because you haven't had enought time to completely
heal inside and the texture of the popcorn could disrupt your staple line
or irritate your pouch. i would at least wait until 6 mo out and when you
do eat it...eat very, very, slow and chew, chew, chew! hope this
helps...Holly

I am 16 mo. post op and I too have had popcorn. I was two mo. out the
first time I tried some and had no problem, but everyone is different, so
be real careful. I only ate about 1/2 cup at a time back then. I'm real
bad about remembering to chew, but I would'nt do like me. Your better off
chewing a lot. Good luck with your new life. Paula B.

I'm 4 wks. post-op (duodenal switch), and yes I eat popcorn with no
problems at all. Just make sure you chew it well & eat slo-w-w-w-ly.
