Question:
What are your thoughts on pain patch for RNY patients?

I have read that people feel the patch only lasts two days instead of three. Also is it better on your liver to use the Fentanyl patch? I have tried other pain meds for my Fibromyalgia and the patch seems to work the best, but I would like people's views on the patch. Good and bad experiences are welcome.    — Kristy (posted on March 10, 2009)

Kristy, I too have Fybro. I use Tramadol oral, but will check with my Dr. the end of the month. Have you tried the Fibro. forum on this site? Perhaps someone there would be able to help. Shelly

Hi I personally wasn't on the patch but my husband was. He had 5 back operations and he was on that for many years. I do believe it works very good. But like u said by the third day he was almost in pain. The third day he would change it early in the morning. He was on 150 mg(mcg). He also lost weight on it,not sure why but he did. Please watch how much pain meds you go on. My husband was an addict with pain meds after 15 years of taking them,he found 1 doctor that gave him anything he wanted,He was on 8 different medicines for pain, well he became nasty and mean .He wind up overdosing so please watch yourself....Good Luck

My thoughts... The fentanyl patch (Duragesic) should not be used to manage post-op pain. If it is being used for to manage chronic pain, then I think its fine. You said "Is it better on your liver to use the Fentanyl patch?" .... Better on your liver than what? The fentanyl patch works the same as oral pain meds... the route (how it gets into your body) is different but once it is absorbed into your body, it is processed/metabolized the same way as oral pain medication. Good luck!

My Husband used the patch for about 2 years and he was always sleepy. Now I have Fibromyalgia and I use Lyrica and Celebrex to handle my pain. I have to take a Darvocet every once in a while. Have you tried Lyrica or Celebrex yet? let me know what happens.

There is a new patch out now. It is made with voltaren, a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory medicine that bypass the stomache. Ask your doctor about it.
