Question:
Is dumping like what I have since gallbladder surgery

I had gallbladder surgery 10 years ago, ever since then I some foods just run right through me. I'll have to go to the restroom 20 minutes after I eat. Don't mean to be graphic but it is all liquid. Is this like the dumping I will get with Gastri Bypass?    — pugsley101 (posted on August 2, 2008)

Some people experience dumping to greater or lesser degrees. Essentially, the end result is what you take in ends up in the TOILET a short time later. There are SOME people on the boards who RECOMMEND this as a way to LOSE WEIGHT! This is a VERY DANGEROUS and IRRESPONSIBLE PRACTICE! Those who ESPOUSE such an activity should be BANNED from the boards as far as I am concerned! Basically, what they are telling people to do is to PRACTICE a TWISTED version of BULIMIA! This is especially dangerous for people who have had the Gastric Bypass or the Duodenal Switch because these people have to take SUPPLEMENTS to AUGMENT their DIETS due to the problem with malabsorption. When they PRACTICE this type of bulimic behavior, they tend to FLUSH these supplements OUT of their system, and they LOSE the benefit of having TAKEN them, AND they lose the MONEY that was spent ON the supplement as WELL! People who PRACTICE this type of weight loss regimen run the risk of malnutrition. Now, I know that you have experienced some GREAT discomfort with your Gallbladder issue, and you are not likely to be one of these people to practice this type of behavior, but as I stated earlier, some people experience these dumping symptoms to a much lesser degree. Some have the symptoms that are so mild, that all they experience is the diarrhea. I also realize that while this may be a bit too much information for YOU, OTHER people will be reading this response at a later time, and I would like for THEM to know that the practice of eating to DELIBERATELY CAUSE dumping is DANGEROUS and should be AVOIDED! Any so called "EXPERT" that ADVISES you to DO SO should have the advice IGNORED and be ROUNDLY TOLD OFF in no uncertain terms! They should ALSO be reported to the management at Obesity Help for encouraging DANGEROUS PRACTICES that could HARM other people's HEALTH! I personally don't care WHAT they do to THEMSELVES, but I do NOT want them giving this type of advice to NEWBIES who may consider this a GOOD way to lose a few pounds without any detrimental effects.

I was reading the 2 answers posted for your question. Its all true about the dumping syndrome and you should take caution with your intake after surgery. But, I don't know if its the answer you were looking for. I understand what they are saying but I don't see how they are related entirely or even partly to your question or your problem. It sounds to me that you may need more fiber in your diet. However, with a problem like yours, you should consult with your doctor and tell your surgeon as well to see if they can help you to start working on healthy bowl movement before and after surgery. I had a friend that had this problem after surgery of her intestine and the doctor Rx'd OTC fiber supliment. Don't know if this may help you, but a little fiber never hurt anyone. Fiber helps to regulate the digestive system whether you have diarrea like symptoms or constipation.

Dumping takes many different forms and a lot of folks don't realize they get it. Most typical is either the same loose bowels you describe or vomiting. I actually experience a rapid heartbeat for a few minutes following sugar intake. Took me a while to figure out that is what it was. I had only heard of the first two symptoms but discovered the rapid heartbeat only happened following eating a sugary food which I shouldn't have had anyway. The rules post surgery are in place for a reason. Know that your life after surgery will likely be so much better on many levels but that you will always have to be diligent in the fight to eat and exercise right, don't stretch the pouch back out etc. There are many tools like this site to help you. USE THEM!! I have become involved with www.proteinoptions.com which is up and coming. Provides protein rich recipes (including snack foods like cookies) using real food which you may benefit from after you get further out from surgery. Best of luck to you in your new life ahead!

I also had gallbladder surgery 10 years ago. I too experience certain types of foods that run right through me. Expecially if the food is fatty. The gallbladder is no longer there to help breakdown or digest the fats so they run right through us instead. I mentioned this to my nutritionist last week and she said that the symptoms such as sweating, cramping, dizziness, loose stool, fatigue and nausea are common for people without a gallbladder and are very similar to dumping syndrome. Our bodies way of telling us we are eating the wrong things.

That end or the other, usually accompanied with stomach pain and usually always nausea from the pain. Some people have it worse than others...I rarely dump, but I do get serious gut pain and gas that hurts so bad that I have to lie down and sleep...I wake up fine, usually. You can't always be in a place where you can just lie down either...You best bet is to follow the rules and you won't experience dumping as frequent as some people. Some people are VERY VERY carb or fat sensitive or both! Me? I can handle about 25 gs of sugar and I don't eat a lot of fatty, fried or greasy food. I had a half a Mc Donalds burger one day...(was starving and on travels and had no good choices...) Well I wanted a hamburger! So I got myself one...It hit my pouch like a rock! Then came the gassy achy pains...nausea and diarreah...Too much fat in that fast food junk...My mouth was coated with grease too and that just made me feel even more sick...YUCK! Sometimes we just try old bad foods...It's not usually worth it...So don't...Or if you do...do with caution! Don't do it while on long road trips! TRUST ME!!!

Dumping was talked about so much before I had the surgery done. I was very fearful of this. I have not once experienced dumping though ... had my surgery March 12, 2008. Don't let the thought of dumping keep you from having the surgery. I almost did ... waited about 3 years longer ... worring about dumping. And now, for me, has not been a problem once!

The responses above are EXCELLENT! The SHORT ANSWER is that "dumping" does not refer to expelling material through the rectum, nor through the mouth for that matter. What you ae experiencing is not "the dumping syndrome". P.S.: Dumping is a blessing, not a curse. The avoidance of it through good eating habits will play a big role in weight loss uccess. Note that the dumping syndrome is associated with R-N-Y, not Lap-band.

I had gallbladder surgery 2 yrs ago and experience the exact same thing you do BUT none of the other symptoms described in WLS dumping. Looks like its a horse of a different color. I haven't had my WLS surgery yet but if only dumping were as easy as the symtoms I get from my gall bladder after eating. And i must add that the higher the fat content of the meal, the faster I gotta go. Well let it serve as a deterrnt to me then after I have it. All the more reason to be very careful about my diet.
