Question:
I have been getting dizzy when I stand up to fast.
I was wondering if this is due to me not getting enough water or other liquids. I am 5weeks post op and have finally been getting 45-50 oz of water in. But when I stand to fast, I get this rush of dizziness. My doctor says it is liquids but I am also taking two HBP meds. I tried quitting one of my meds and I felt like my pulse was racing so I started taking both meds again. My doc was aware of me quitting my one med. — shelleymm (posted on April 12, 2007)

I am 7.5 months out and was put into the hospital 2 weeks ago because I was
doing the same thing. You need more water. Do NOT let yourself get
dehydrated. Good Luck!

Hi...
1. Don't let yourself get dehydrated, you are to drink a MINIMUM of 64oz
daily, decaf liquids - if you have to sip all day long, then do so...
eventually you will be able to drink a couple of ounces at a time.
2. Do some BP checks... you can go to any clinic and they will do free bp
checks, you can also go into your local ER and get free bp checks, although
you may have to wait. It may be that you don't necessarily need your bp
meds any longer.
3. quitting your bp meds without weaning off them can be dangerour. It
sounds like you may have been on a beta blocker if you stopped the one and
your HR began to get faster. Beta blockers also help slow your heartrate.
Never quit any type of cardiac, psych meds, etc cold turkey without your
doctor telling you to do so.
4. I would say that if you continue to have these problems, then make
another appt with your physician, but make sure that you are getting
sufficient quantities of liquids in, so that can be eliminated as a
possible cause.
5. The other potential problem could be that you may be anemic... I don't
know when the last time that you had your blood work checked. Take your
iron supplements and get your protein in. Just remember you are not
absorbing all of the protein that you consume, that is why it is important
to consume a high (60gm+) daily... whatever your dietician told you to
consume.
Hope this helped and good luck to you.

I noticed that two --I think it was my second week out. I knew that I
needed more fluids and the minute I drank a little more water I was okay.

Check your BP. Is it worse about mid afternoon? I had this trouble early on
for over 6 months, one day at about a month post op I sat down at a BP
machine, because I was going down seeing stars:( My BP was like 80 over 50
, its coming up on 6 years, dont remember exactly. called my doc got off
all the pills. aroud 3 pm daily I would get lightheaded and see stars, my
PCP said its the time our circidian clock resets. See you PCP and in the
mean time go visit some BP machines, you may be amazed at how things have
changed

I sam with just about everbody else here. More liquid. At least 64 oz in 24
hours. As for the BP meds please do not try that again without your Drs.
approval. It will take time to get off of your meds. I am three months out
and we are just now taking some of my medication away and it is a slow
weaning process. You can't shock your body that way. You could even send
yourself into a stroke. So....sip sip sip and get in that liquid. In the
meantime get up slowly so you don't fall. Stand for a little while to get
your bearings before you walk. This whole process is a learning experience.
Congratulations on your choice and courage to make a healthy life change.
God Bless, Norma

We just discussed this in my support group. The nurse who runs the
meetings said that after WLS surgery, nothing you should do should be fast.
Move slowly. It could be residue from the anesthesia but more likely it's
lack of water. I researched hydration once and one of the side effects of
dehydration is dizziness. I had dizzy spells from rising out of bed both
before and after surgery (and sometimes I didn't think I moved all that
fast). This has completely resolved itself as I have been able to drink
more water. I drink 80-100 oz daily now and never have the dizziness
issue. It'll be slow but you will get there. Just sip sip sip!

PEOPLE! Take all HPB's at night only they thin the blood so when you stand
up or change position you get a dizzing rush! If you take them at night,
the body adjusts while you are sleeping! Dehydration is always a concern
but to stop the dizzy rush...that's what you have to do.

I had that problem before wls and so did my dad. We both had type 2
diabeties (my dad was at average weight). I had thought maybe that was the
cause of the dizziness when standing up to quickly. I would discuss that
with your doctor. Good luck!
