Question:
2 weeks post op, everything causing diarrhea, please help
New to OH & don't have a profile up yet but hoping someone can help. I had GBS RNY on Dec. 15th, everything is causing Diarrhea & bloating. Thought it was lactose intolerance (have history of this) stopped taking in milk for meal replacement shakes, didn't help. I have fibromyalgia and have to take 12 different meds daily including methadose, and other narcotics. Don't know if the meds could be causing the problem (they used to cause constipation?) Also stopped drinking light fruit juices thinking this might be the problem. Nothing seems to work. Called my nutritionsist, before I could explain said it was an issue for the Dr. Before I could call Dr., his office called me to cancel my 2 week post op appt. Hasn't been rescheduled yet. Need help from you experts that may have been through this. Thanks — carm8a (posted on December 30, 2006)

Are you still taking the meds? Because you are not having solid foods, the
meds are probably causing the diarrhea. I really don't know what it is,
it's just a guess. I would definitely call the doctor's office and insist
that he call you back ASAP. I am sure the doctor can tell you over the
phone what it is and how you should handle it. Be a pest, you don't want
to get dehydrated and wind up back in the hospital.

I agree with Sheri, be a pest. He/She is suppose to be there for you or
someone. Are you getting in enough water and protein. Protein first.
What kind of meds? When I left the hospital they had me on only about 3
meds, down from 20. Call your PCP if the surgeon isn't going to help. Who
prescribed the meds?

I agree keep pestering the doc,
also stick to clear fluids for 24 to 48 hours to see if the diareah will
stop. keep taking all your meds.
But remember your body can go with out food for a couple of days but you
must remain hidrated, so keep drinking that water.

I too agree with previous posts but have a personal note to add. I myslef
kept loose stools and diarhea for nearly a month. I ate and drank as I was
told to, but it was like my body just had to readjust itself to the new
diet. You have to think, jellos, pudding, they are all water based, and
what goes in, must go out. Just keep hydrated and continue doing what your
doctor tells you. More than likely this will resolve itself. I should also
tell you I had my gallbladder removed several years prior to surgery and
have kept somewhat softer stool ever since. Have no idea if this had
anything to do with it or not. Anyhow, good luck, I hope everything works
out, and Happy New Year!

I had the lapband put in on Dec 4th and I have to tell you I had diarrhea
for 1 week after I got home. It was getting me worried and I did a stupid
thing, I took imodium D to stop it and it did for a day and then returned
for 1 day and then stopped on it's own.. I don't know if that was a smart
thing to do or not. I should have called the DR. but it stopped and I
didn't. If you can't get rid of your diarrhea then by all means call your
Dr. and insist that you speak with him. You could just need more time to
adapt to your new plumbing. Good luck

I think as long as you are taking in only liquid, you will probably have
diarrhea. Thats the way it was for me.
