Question:
Long Term Post Ops: Do you Drink Socially? How Much is Safe/Too Much?
Does anyone have documented medical references about alcohol consumption? I enjoy an occasional drink - usually not hard liquor, beer or wine. I'm talking socially, not drinking everyday or in large amounts. I would like to know if anyone has had any documented complications (heard of anyone having complications)from social use of alcohol. How much causes liver complications? MDs, please answer. Thanks. — [Anonymous] (posted on May 16, 2001)

There was a couple of similar questions recently, and lots of opinions! I
think one of the posts was even deleted. I, myself am only 4 weeks post
op, and my surgeon said it was okay to drink socially, but to be cautious.
I don't drink heavily either, but like to enjoy a drink every now and then.
I am not aware of any documented cases/complications regarding this
subject, but honestly have not done a lot of research. I think social
drinking is okay, as long as it's done in moderation, and not over done. At
least that's the word from my surgeon, although each surgeon varies. I
would suggest speaking with yours to find out if there are particular
guidelines he/she would like you to go by. Good luck. Maybe some other
people from this site will have more info.

I was at a hospital sponsored support meeting last night and that question
came up. The answer was you feel the alcohol a lot quicker and it takes
less to get drunk so be careful and it's a lot of empty calories.
