Question:
Dr. Wongsa's patients: Does he do an upper gi following surgery to check for leaks?

I am having my revision to RNY on May 15th with Dr. Wongsa in Houston, Tx. Right after my VBG I had an intestinal blockage which caused a rupture in my intestines. This required emergency surgery. I am scared I might have something like this again. I didn't have a barium swallow after my VBG. I would like to know from Dr. Wongsa's patients if he does an upper gi when you are in the hospital. Thanks for you help!    — Michele :. (posted on April 18, 2001)

Dr. Wongsa does the leak test while you are still in the OR. I had the LAP RNY, so I have no idea if your case would be different. I had no NG tube or any problems after surgery. Good Luck

I don't think that I would be asking what this surgeon does "normally". I feel that your situation is not the norm and should be considered carefully and individually by the surgeon. I believe that the surgeon should take extra care considering your history. If an upper GI would reassure you and make you feel more comfortable, then my all means ask and expect to get it!! Again, you need to be considered on an individual basis.
