Question:
Has anyone had a significant other who wanted to stay at the hospital with them
after they have the surgery? He wants to have a cot put in my room and stay there with me the entire time I am in the hospital...He is going to take a 2 weeks off from work so he can take care of me..Will hospitals let him do this, has anyone ever had their spouse or significant other spend the night with them. I will be staying at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia...Any answers would be greatly appreciated — Ang B. (posted on March 14, 2001)

I am not sure, because each hospital is different, but if this is something
you want him to do too, then I would just call the hospital ahead of time
and ask them what their guidelines are..............hope it works out.

HI! I HAVE HAD TWO "ANGELITES" WHO EACH HAD THEIR SIGNIFICANT
OTHERS STAY WITH THEM. THE HOSPITALS PUT A ROLL AWAY BED IN THE ROOM FOR
THEIR COMFORT. THE NURSES SEEMED TO DIG IT BECAUSE THE SWEETIES TOOK CARE
OF MOST OF THE PATIENTS NEEDS OTHER THAN MEDS! IT WAS COOL. TRY IT WITH
YOUR LOCAL PLACE! JO

Hi!
My surgeon actually requested that my sweetheart stay the first night with
me! He does with all his patients.

My 17-yr-old daughter stayed with me the entire 5 days and nights. They
brought her in a fold out bed, they got a shower ready for her every day,
and they were very nice to her. Call the surgical floor or visit them and
ask the nurses. Don't ask in admittance, they don't know what goes on on
the floors anyway.

I had my husband, mother and daughter take turns staying with me, it was
great... they pushed the morphine pump for me and I don't remember much
about the first two days.
Good Luck

Both hospitals here in town allow family to stay with them while in the
hospital. The floor nurses can get a rollaway for them. The hospital
where I am from went by the guidelines on the visiting hours and would NOT
allow anyone overnight. It depends on the policy that the hospital has in
place. Your surgeon should also be able to answer that question for you as
well as they have to be familiar with hospital policy in order to have
rights at that hospital if you didnt feel comfortable calling the floor and
asking them. Hope this helps.

I agree with the suggestion to call the hospital and ask what their policy
is. My husband stayed with me the whole time (he even slept on the floor
the first two nights before they brought him a cot!) and I'm so glad he was
there. He encouraged me to get up and walk and helped me in and out of bed.
He also was a great go-between me and the nursing staff. We've been married
for over 23 years so he's seen it all and me at my worst. If the hospital
says OK and he wants to I would strongly suggest him staying with you (as
long as you feel comfortable with it!).

My mother stayed with me for a few nights while I was in the hospital.
There was a recliner in my room that she used to sleep on. It was great
because I was so scared and I needed her to just be there for me. She was
also able to get my meals. They were supposed to be for me, and since they
were already payed for and I wasn't eating them, I got food service to
bring a tray for her. She loved it. Good luck.

I was at the Southpointe Hospital in St. Louis, MO. They welcome spouses
and already have a sofa pullout in the room. This hospital also provided
meals and an 800# for my family out of town. They were wonderful! Good
Luck! I couldn't have made it without my husband looking after me.

My doctor tells you to have someone stay with you. I stayed with my sister
inlaw a recliner in the room and she is going to stay with me. It good to
have someone advocate for you and make sure you get what you need.

I was of a different mindset. In the hospital I had nurses and aides. At
home I wanted hubby to help me. While I was in the hospital I wanted him
to get rest and be refreshed when I got out. It was a good thing because I
was hard on him the first 2 weeks. In the hospital I didn't even want
visitors. I was sleeping a lot of the time.
