Question:
What happens if you have a fistula?
I'm trying to get a revision to RNY after a VBG in 1997. I had an upper GI and just found out I have GERD and a fistula, a leak in my staple line. What does this mean? Where does the food or whatever leak to and what else good happen because of this? How long can I wait to have my revision? I was hoping to have it at the beginning of June. Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks! — Michele :. (posted on March 2, 2001)

I am 6 weeks post op with bypass surgery. I developed a fistula about two
weeks after the surgery. The hole/fistula was caused by my smaller bowel
developing an infection which caused it to leak and push the contents up
through my incesion. My doctor said that is was very rare, and will be
temporary. I am on my 4th week with the fistula, which is covered with a
colostomy bag. Not a pleasant situation....I am not sure if you having a
fistula in the past would mean you would develop one again. My doctor
indicated that after it closes up, and if I was to have surgery later,
there would be no trace of the fistula. Leading me to belive that it only
occurs in rare occasions.

At 2 days post op they found a leak in my staple line (rny) at 10 days
post, they discovered that it had formed a fistula into the lower pouch.
My Dr. explained that a fistula is a 'communication' or 'track' into the
lower stomach. They believe that it will close on its own...and 2 other
surgeons have given me the same information. This is the first fistula
from a gastric leak that my surgeon has encountered. I hope they're right
but the plan is to reoperate in 6 to 12 months if it does not close on its
own.
