Question:
What tests are needed when getting a revision from VBG to RNY?

I had a VBG in 1997 and am currently trying to get a revision to an RNY. Do you have to get all the same tests as the first time? I went to an internist, cardiologist, and had a psych eval. I don't think all of this is necessary again. My surgeon has asked for an upper gi and pouch study and I'm going to the gastroenterologist for an endoscopy. Is that it? Anything would be helpful!    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 26, 2001)

I had VBG done about 4 years ago and had all the test you had done. When I went to my new dr. with questions regarding a revision all he did was the study of the old pouch and upper GI. He found that the staple line was no longer intaked. It was a lot easier for me the second time around. I too was worried about having to go through all those tests again, but for me it was a very easy process. Thank goodness. I had my revision to RNY Dec. 27, 2000. I am now about 9 weeks post op and down about 33 lbs. and feeling great. I am so glad I went through with the surgery again!!! I know all dr. are different but that was my experience. Good luck. Like Colleen and yourself, I had an upper GI and pouch study followed by an EGD (endoscopy) by my surgeon so he could actually see what he was going to be doing. My staple line was intact but my band was gone and my pouch was stretched. Right before surgery I had to have the usual bloodwork and EKG and that was it. My revision was less painful than my VBG although I was sore longer and developed a nasty post-op infection at 2 weeks that ended me back up in the hospital for 5 more days. My revision was 5/22/00 and I'm down from 225 to 160 and in a size 10 jeans. I'd do it again if I had to (although I pray I won't). Good luck! Kellye
