Question:
Do vitamins interfere with synthroid absorption?

I was telling a friend of mine, who is a nurse anesthetist, about my synthroid dosage not being adequate since surgery. She take it also -- and was telling me that taking multi-purpose vitamins or calcium within six hours of taking the synthroid makes the synthroid ineffective. Since I take all of my vitamins together (except iron and Calcium). Has anyone heard anything like this before?    — Audrey M. (posted on January 23, 2001)

Audrey...I believe your friend is right. Recently I went to drkoop.com and put in all of my prescriptions and vitamins I am taking...and it did show a problem. Also Grapefruit Juice is not good to drink with some pills and vits. Hope this helped!!

I too take synthroid. My endocrinologist told me to take it at a completely separate time than my calcium because it absorbs it. I take my calcium alone at bedtime. My synthroid and hyzaar (HPB) I take in the morning when I first wake up. I take my fist dose of vitamins (Iron,Centrum and Vit. A&D)about and hr or 2 after breakfast and the second dose about and hr or so after lunch. I have had to have my thyroid medicine reduced once so far due to my weight loss. I like that fact..

The iron in your MVI binds with your synthroid and makes it ineffective. Tqake y9ur MVI at nite, synthroid in the morning, as it does increase your energy, and could cause insomnia if taken at nite., You nurse anesthtist friend is right and a good resource. Corrine
