Question:
If you had a staple line disruption - what type of staples and how many rows?
Hi! I am scheduled to have a RNY 100 cm bypassed with a surgeon with a very low complication rate partly due to very conservative surgery choices. He won't do a transected stomach because he says it adds to the complications possible due to the surgery. He says that currently the two best methods are transection and 3 double rows of titanium staples - a total of 6 rows. If you had a staple line disruption: What type of surgery did you have? How long before the disruption occured? What type of staples? How many rows did you have? Thanks for the info!!!!!! — Marilyn M. (posted on October 11, 2000)

Hi!
I had open RNY on 5/19/00. At around 3 mos. post op, I had to have an
endoscopy and dilation of the opening into my pouch. It had become
narrowed due to scar tissue. When they did the dilation - it blew a very
small opening (4mm) in my staple line. My surgeon is not concerned with
this. She says the only thing that could fit through there is liquid,
anyway.

I know my surgeon uses titanium staples, rather than transection of the
stomach, to form the pouch - but I'm not sure how many rows. I think it's
only two!

Best of luck to you! :)

My staples disrupted before 6 weeks (confirmed by upper GI) and I honestly
feel they were disrupted before I left the hospital as I was hungry right
after surgery.
My doctor states that I had 10 rows of titaniun staples. However, the
Upper GI did not show but a handful of staple scattered around the area.
Good Luck!!
