Question:
Have you had a second round of hair loss?
I am 8 months post op and had some loss of hair from around months 4-6. It seemed to stop and now is back with much more vigor than before. I actually had increased my protein from 70 grams a day to 90 grams a day and my weight loss really picked up. But....that is when I started losing again. Can the increase in something be related or is this just something that happens to people? Don't give me that anesthesia stuff because I have had surgery before and you don't lose hair like this whenever you have other surgeries. Just wonder if I should be hat shopping instead of sitting here researching this phenomenon. HELP!!! ;o) — S S. (posted on September 26, 2000)

Have you had your blood levels checked for vitamins and minerals?
Sometimes it takes a number of months for your body's reserves to get
depleted, then you turn up with a deficiency or two. That might be the
cause of late hair loss. Talk to your surgeon.

Oh my gosh, Steph! Arrrgghhhh.....LOL....I didn't have a second round of
hair loss, mine was continuous from about 5 months until 12 months post-op.
I took the advice of those wiser than I am, and added the
zinc/biotin/betacarotene regimin to my daily intake of supps. I didn't see
any change, so I increased the biotin. Still nothing. When I once again
increased the biotin, the hair loss seemed to stop overnight. Could be a
coincidence, but I don't think so. On the upside, my nails look fabulous!
So Steph, how the heck are ya? Hugs,

Hi! I can only speak for myself, but something similar happened to me,
too. I began losing gobs of hair a week short of being 3 months out. It
was really pretty gross. I tried not to let it bother me, but my hair was
long at the time and, after washing, I was always covered down to my
elbows. . . EWWWWWW!!!!! Around 7 months out I THOUGHT It was slowing down
or getting ready to stop. Maybe it was me doing some wishful thinking. . .
not sure. It was slower for a few weeks and then. . . LOOKOUT!!! Here it
came again. Needless, to say, I was pretty bummed out. Now I am 10.5
months out and it seems to have stopped again. Will it restart? I hope
not. . . but film at 11. ;>)
Good Luck!

I have been getting B-12 shots, on a weekly basis, since January. It has
really been helping. However, during the summer I skipped an entire month
(due to car problems), and sure enough the hair started falling out even
worse than before. It has stopped again, but I hardly have any hair left.
It is so thin....I cannot believe it.
But hopefully soon it will get back in shape again, it just takes time.
You might ask your doctor about B-12 shots. I have a HMO, and there is no
co payment for these because I do not have to see the doctor every week,
just a nurse.
Good Luck!
