Question:
Taking IRON supplements Post - Op??
Do you have to take iron supplements post op? How much? My dietician just told me I need to be taking them. My PCP said that my blood work in that area is good and I don't need to. He also said it will irritate my pouch. I am already on potassium supplements that irritate it. Please advise! — kathy S. (posted on September 14, 2000)

Ferrous sulfate will irritate your pouch. But that's OK as we don't absorb
that form anyway. Ferrous fumarate or carbonyl iron or polysacchrides are
easy on the pouch and absorb very well, too. Iron needs to be taken with
C, but not with calcium, minerals, antibiotics, tums, ulcer meds or
caffeine. A good brand to use is Perfect Iron, which are 25mg of carbonyl
iron per pill.

All I can tell you is this....TAKE YOUR IRON! I am battling an iron
problem as we speak and you DON'T want to go through this. Michelle Curran
is sooo knowledgable and sensible and really knows her stuff...we are all
lucky to have her on here. Listen to what she says and then talk to your
doctor.
Good luck,
Barb
