Question:
Why am I developing so many kidney stones post-op?
At 4 1/2 weeks post-op I went to the ER with excruciating back pain. I had a kidney stone, and was in the hospital almost three days passing it. Two weeks later, I learned I might have another one forming. Three months later, (I am now 4 1/2 months post op), I have just learned that not only do I indeed have another stone, but I have two more! I am scheduled for a lithrotripsy (sp?) this week. I am scared to have this procedure, not really sure what to expect for after affects. But, I am mostly concerned with why I am developing so many stones. I am very careful to get all my water in every day - especially since passing my first stone at 4 weeks post-op. I take my multi-vitamin, extra zinc and Bcomplex (for my hair loss). I am deeply concerned that my wls has given me a lifetime pain in the back! No one ever told me that I would deal with kidney stones like this. — Lori B. (posted on August 28, 2000)

Hi Lori: I feel sorry for you for having to experience this. I checked in
the "Library" under Kidney Stones and found a number of answers
for you on this. I also noted that you had asked this question before. My
husband has had a lithroscopy (sp.) and it is a painless procedure, so
don't worry. Its much easier than passing a stone. ouch! We did some
research on stones at that time and it depends on the make-up of the stone
as to the determining cause. Your doctor should do a test to see what the
stone is made of then advise you on the cause. Best wishes.

When I had my stone, my urogolgist put me on Calcium Citrate, as the
treatment of choice. I'm here to tell you, you should ALREADY be taking
1500mg of citrate just as a WLS pt. So, while you're waiting for appts to
come and go, get on down to WalMart, bite the bullet and get started. Not
Viactiv, not the cheaper pills. Calcium in citrate form. You're already
drinking water, so you've got that down. I was told to eliminate iced tea,
all pop (diet or not) and spinach. Of course, take what's LEFT of my
vices, said me!

Don't be scared of lithotripsy. Basically, they just bombard your kidneys
with sound waves to break up the stones so they can pass. I've never heard
of anyone having problems with kidney stones because of the surgery. It
may just be a coincidence and have nothing to do with the surgery. Have you
asked your surgeon about this?
