Question:
Am I doing any good?

I was wondering if I'm doing any good by my workouts. By that I mean I have been swimming (slowly) three times a week for about an hour straight. I also have been walking everyday. Is the swimming doing me any good for weight loss? And....when I walk, how come 15 minutes into my walking on a treadmill I feel weak like I wont be able to finish? I'm 6 weeks post-op. Thanks!!!!!!    — [Anonymous] (posted on July 21, 2000)

I think you are pushing yourself too hard. Your body is still healing. I think you are doing a great job with the swimming and walking but take it easy. I know they say at six weeks you should be able to live like normal. Maybe for some people. Listen to your body. I know I was three weeks post op I had to mow my lawn. Boy was that a task. I thought I was going to faint. When I finish I took a shower and laid down to get my strenght back. After that I started to taking it easy. I am three half post op and still at times I feel weak. Good luck to you!!

I had my surgery 4/4/00 and my surgeon would not let me exercise until my 6 week check-up he wanted everything to heal. I did have 5 hernia repairs at the same time I not sure if that played a part in his decision. I think 6 weeks is his normal. Don't overdo. I'm 14 weeks post op and sometime I can only do 20-30 mins at a time walking. depending on how busy my day was. Your doing great.

I admire your determination - but it is too soon to be pushing yourself so hard! Make sure you're taking all your vitamins and drinking your water. If you are tired after 15 minutes, then just do it twice a day for a while and slowly increase - perhaps 2 to 5 minutes each week or so. There was a lot of cutting and sewing done inside your body - and an hour of swimming at this point is way too much. I would have recommended that you didn't begin swimming until after 8 weeks, anyway. Why not just walk in the water? That is great exercise. Best wishes.
