Question:
What type of leg exercises are best for the inner leg?
I am almost 4 weeks post op (open RNY) and don't want to do anything too strenuous, but I can definitely see that I need to start firming and toning the insides of my upper legs. Should I use weights? How much? Thanks for any info! — Conny M. (posted on June 12, 2000)

Connie - the trainer at my Health Club tells me the best exercise for inner
thighs is the ballet squat. Open your legs as wide as possible, with your
feet facing out in opposite directions (point your right foot to the right,
left foot left -- so your feet are perpendicular to your body). Suck in
your abs, tuck in your butt, and squat -- keeping your back straight. Try
to keep you weight centered in your heels. It helps to gently use a high
countertop for balance (I use my entertainment center - fingertips only --
you dont want to use your arms to help lift you up or push you down).
Inhale as you squat, exhale as you stand. Your knees should never go past
your feet - or you'll hurt your knees. Move slowly and fluidly - don't try
to force yourself lower - this should not hurt. I count and hold about
three seconds, then stand and repeat. I was told to do a set of 8 every
OTHER day; I'm now doing 2 sets of 8. The area does look smaller and
firmer, but so do all of us!!!!! Good luck.

Squats are probably the best. Be careful not to use a "bouncing"
motion instead utilizing a fluid motion and stretching into it as much as
possible. Lunges are also good: Stand feet shoulder length apart. Place
one foot directly in front in the "lunge" position and raise
yourself back up. This is also good when done on stairs or on a chair
seat. Leg scissors are also good (particularly if you can apply the
tension to the inner thighs as with a thigh master).

Talk to your doctor first, and be sure you have his approval to begin
exercising (other than walking). I am 5 weeks post-op, and I must wait
until 8 weeks.

If you want a good way to trim the inner thigh try this one out. First sit
on the floor and slide your bottom to the wall put your legs on the wall
and let them fall slowly apart and bring them back together again it is
working lower back and stomach and inner thighs all together I find it best
to do at mid day.
