Question:
Have any of you experienced unhealthy gums after surgery?
I have had two dental check-ups since my surgery 10 months ago. Both check-ups have been the worst of my life, with no change in my oral hygiene (which is impeccable). The dentist is going to begin treatment for gum disease and has repeatedly asked if this startling change in my dental health could be related to the gastric bypass surgery. Have any of you experienced this as a side-effect of the surgery? — [Anonymous] (posted on May 24, 2000)

Hi:
my name is Avis Gandy. I had my surgery 5 years ago. I had the VGB
surgery. Have lost 145+ pounds. Gone from size 26 1/2 to 14-16. i belong
to a support group and have never heard anyone with dental or gum problems.
Could it be a nutritional problem? Getting enough calcium? Have you
dixcussed this with a nutritionist? let me know what you find out, OK.

I just had my 6-month checkup and cleaning and was shocked to find out I
had 2 cavities and 4 more teeth with pre-cavity stains. I have not had a
cavity in over 10 years. In my case I would have to agree that one should
be extra careful with dental hygiene following surgery. I am 7 months
post-op and during the first 2 months threw up quite a bit. I drink
adequate amounts of milk and take my vitamins and have always been told I
have strong teeth.
