Have any of you experienced unhealthy gums after surgery?

I have had two dental check-ups since my surgery 10 months ago. Both check-ups have been the worst of my life, with no change in my oral hygiene (which is impeccable). The dentist is going to begin treatment for gum disease and has repeatedly asked if this startling change in my dental health could be related to the gastric bypass surgery. Have any of you experienced this as a side-effect of the surgery?
