Question:
Do thyroid problems cause hair loss?
I am concerned because I am already losing hair and I have not yet had the surgery. My open RNY is scheduled for January 27th. I have a thyroid condition and take medication for it? Does anyone know if my hair loss will be greater because of this? Also, does anyone know if the thyroid condition can improve after surgery? — Brenda B. (posted on January 11, 2000)

Hi i also have a thyroid problem and i take meds for it
it doesn't cause hair loss i dont believe andyou will be able to still take
your meds after surgery unfortuneatly
they dont make a liquid form so you will have to crush your pill and with
weight loss your thyroid could get better but you will have to still take
the meds and discuss with your
doc for retesting with out the meds to see if it has improved.... i had my
surgery 12-17 and have a thyroid problem also have had hair loss in the
past not from the surgery but from genes i guess.. just make sure you get
lots of protiens this will help with hair loss... good luck

I am 11 months post op and I still take my meds to help with my
hypo-thyroid condition. I had a problem with hair loss at 6 months out.
My med team had me increase protein, and add 50 mg of zinc and 10,000 IUs
of beta carotene to my suppliments. The hair loss stopped within two weeks
of this protocol. Good luck!
