Do thyroid problems cause hair loss?

I am concerned because I am already losing hair and I have not yet had the surgery. My open RNY is scheduled for January 27th. I have a thyroid condition and take medication for it? Does anyone know if my hair loss will be greater because of this? Also, does anyone know if the thyroid condition can improve after surgery?
