Question:
I am intersted to know if anyone else has heard sugar stretches the pouch

I recently read a posting on another site and that person (9 years post-op) stated that you should consume only 4 grams of sugar or less at a meal as sugar will cause your pouch to stretch. I am quite familiar with dumping syndrome and its symptoms but have NEVER heard anything about sugar causing your pouch to stretch. This sounds a little far-fetched. In the two years of research I have been doing I have come across nothing of the sort. I would appreciate any information or clarification the medical community subscribed to this site could provide.    — Cissy C. (posted on June 30, 1999)

I don't know if sugar, itself, stretched the pouch, but the 4gm statement is accurate, according to my support group. The sugar is absorbed faster than any other type of food, so it's best to avoid it at all costs. Just remember, if sugar doesn't make you dump, it WILL make you fat.

I don't know about streaching the pouch, but in our class on your diet after surgery we were told to look at the lable and if the third item was sugar then we were not to eat it. I would think just over eating in general would cause the pouch to streach.

Hi, I'm the person you are discussing on the other site. :~) Christine??!! I understand your confusion on the sugar and stretching thing. I urge you to contact my physicians office and request some info on the subject, they are VERY helpful. Especially if you tell them you got the info from me. They will bend over backwards to help. Dr. S Ross fox, Tacoma WA. (253)472-9850 Take Care, Christine :~)

I too have never heard anything of sugar causing the pouch to stretch ... However .. varying severity of dumping syndrom is quite another story. I can tolerant different types of sugar ... oddly ... cotton candy doesn't effect me in the slightest, when I've taken a few bites of some ... but JUICE .. can't tolerate even a little.
