Question:
Has anyone ever had RNY followed by lap band surgery?
Has anyone out there ever had open RNY followed by another weight loss surgery procedure? I had open RNY in 2002 and lost 75 pounds in the first year. During that first year, my surgeon moved out of state. The practice had no structured after care program (take note to check this out pre-ops!!!) I have now regained almost 50 pounds. I was able to eat quite a bit at only 6 months, so felt something was wrong almost from the beginning, but was assured that the goal was for me to eat like a "normal" person. I am so depressed to have gone through this huge operation at great cost and now be almost as big as I was pre-op. I am planning to schedule a consult with one of the surgeons who is now practicing at my former surgeon's office in Charlotte. I was wondering whether anyone out there has had an RNY followed by lap band or other type of surgery? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks!! — asumamma1 (posted on August 1, 2005)

I am a nurse and worked on the Win life floor of a hospital and I know
someone personally that had the original RNY and streatched her pouch back
out and they did a Lap Band procedure on her. Hope it helps.

You might also check into an RNY to DS Revision. I know two people who have
had that done and have been thrilled with their results. I would go to the
DS community here on obesityhelp.com and ask those ladies and gentlemen
there. They are very well versed on the DS and can also give you the names
of surgeons who perform this procedure. Either way, good luck!

I had the lapband put on after my rny. My rny diagonis was a failed stoma.
My pouch was not stretched - the opening just failed to close up after
surgery, which results in allowing for no food limitations. I had the
lapband done, and yes it does work to some extent - with fills to limit
your food limiations. But if I could go back and redo I would opt for a DS
revision - not the lapband. The the lapband does limit some foods; you
still have a failed stoma that will allow you to eat thru the band and for
me since I never get hungry, the lapband didnt help in that area. The DS
revision (even if it is the stomach part only) returns your pouch to normal
functions... just smaller portions. If you have had weight gain, which
wasnt an issue for me when I had the lap band, then I think the DS would be
more approriate also for future weight loss. The band can work, but it
takes ALOT more work and if you have already had the RNY, you might find
dieting more troublesome than if you were just a first time banderst. The
DS conversion would have more risks than having the lapband done tho so you
would need to take that in to consideration.

I have. But if I could do it over again, I would look into the DS to fix
the RNY not the lapband.
