Question:
I had Lap RNY, just a little over 3 weeks ago. To date, I've only lost 14 lbs.
Could I be doing something wrong? Or is this normal to start losing weight slow? I only eat 2 ounces of food at each meal. No snacking in between. I always eat my protein first and then if I am still hungry, I eat some of my other food. (which is usually either Unsweetened applesauce or Carrots/beans or peas). I don't drink an hour before and an hour after eating and never with meals. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong; even though I know I'm not. Any suggestions...... Feeling frustrated. — mzb2u (posted on July 4, 2005)

Sheila,
It ounds like you are doing just fine. When have you ever lost 14 lbs in
3 weeks before. Are you drinking water? You
should be drinking at least 64 oz., a day. Its hard to get it all in at
first, but you can work up to the big amounts. now that it's summer you
should actually be drinking close to 100 oz. a day. Congrats on your
weight loss. You are doing the right things. Don't worry, it will come off
so fast, you won't no what hit you. Be patient, & enjoy the new you.

You're not doing anything wrong that I can tell, When I had my RNY
11/08/04 I lost 12 pounds the first week and then only 6 pounds in the
following 3 weeks. I was beside myself with worry that this wasn't going
to work for me. Well I was wrong now on 7/5/05 I'm down 151 pounds. So
don't lose faith. Continue to follow the Dr's instructions (to a T). It
will come off. Carla

The only thing you are doing wrong is obsessing...lol
Relax...go for a walk...continue eating right and let the weight take care
of itsself...
Have a great day,

I know your a newbie so listen to the others and stop obsessing or getting
on the scale every few hours (uh, am I speaking from experience?!) Everyone
loses differently, even if you start at the same weight and eat the same
things... The only suggestion I will make is that you dont have to wait an
entire hour before eating to refrain from water. Water drains rather
quickly from the pouch and if you stick to that schedule, you will never
get in enough fluids. I'd suggest 15 min to 1/2 hour before eating and
more importantly is the 30-60 minutes after eating to refrain from
drinking. Altho you are a newbie and refraining from drinking after eating
does not mean anything right now-your not eating enough or probably even
feeling hunger yet. It will become important when you are much further out
when staying full longer, and not drinking too soon to avoid washing the
food from the pouch is the goal.

If it's ok with your surgeon start some light exercize like walking. You
are a light-weight and it seems we tend to lose more slowly than the
others.

Well I had mine June 14th, lost 20lbs in about a week, but that second week
out, I stalled. I talked to my nurse today and she said this is typical.
The first gob of weight you lose is mostly water. she said like any diet,
you have to follow the guidelines and it will fall off. So, that's 4-6 oz
max. of food per meal, protein at least 50 grams a day, and 64 ounces of
water. She told me if I slack off on my protein and water, I will stall out
again. I hope this helps. You will start losing again hon. I don't think
you are getting enough protein, and how about your liquids?

Did you weigh yourself when you got out of the hospital? While you are
there, they load you up on fluids in those IV's and you go home weighing
more than when you went in. I lost 14 lbs in 3 weeks also and was upset.
I ended up losing 30lbs total the 3rd through 6th week and almost 20lbs per
month for the next 3 month. Don't get upset yet. I also wanted things to
happen overnight. Look at yourself in 6 months then a year. Document with
pictures how your journey is going. You will look back and be glad that
you did. Make yourself a scrapbook. You and others will love it. I went
from sz. 26 to 10 (some 8's) in 14-15 months. Just hang in there. This
will be the most exciting year of your life! Enjoy it.

Are you walking for cardiovascular exercise daily for :20 - :30min.? If
you've been checked out by your surgeon (Dr. Champion in Atlanta wants to
see us at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, etc.) to gbegin adding weightlifting to your
exercise regimen? Without exercise, your body goes into FASTING MODE and
hoards every calorie it can hold onto, so weight loss can be slower. If you
rev up your metabolic rate (via exercise) it forces the body to burn more
fat; annnnnd, converts more fat to muscle and muscle also metabolizes at a
faster rate.
All the best!

PS My surgeon, Dr. Champion in Atlanta, says it's OK to drink approved
liquids right up until you begin your meal. He suggests waiting :30-:45
min. AFTER the meal before taking in liquids. With your current protocol:
no liquids one hour before & after & during each meal, you could
easily become dehydrated!!
Whatcha think?

Listen. Let me tell you from being 2 year post op. Do not worry about the
numbers. Just eat as instructed. I remember when I first had the surgery
I never even told anyone how much I was loosing. The worst thing is to
compare yourself to others. People look at me today and cannot tell that I
ever had the surgery. I lost my weight slow and my skin does not hang
because of it. My body and weight lost actually paced itself enough so I
did not look like a california raisin after my weight was gone. So just
let your body adjust. Eat right, drink alot of water, and exercise, and
most important get your check ups.
