Question:
Birth Control Pills, Irregular Cycle, and Pregnancy
Hi guys! Ok. I am 27 years old, 20 months post op, thanks to God. I have always been fertile (before surgery), but now I am starting to question it. My Ob/Gyn placed me on birth control pills last year to regulate my cycle. They became irregular after surgery. I've noticed that everytime I stop (or miss one and stop taking them in other words) that it goes back to being irregular (of course). Well, in April I missed a few so I stopped taking them. May 9 I started my cycle for 5 days. May 14 - May 20 my husband and I went all the way...no condoms, etc. May 21 I started bleeding again, and didnt stop until June 3. I went to see my Ob/Gyn and I'm not pregnant. He tells me that with the excessive weight loss that things are crazy with my hormones, and I understand this. I guess I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who experienced or have knowledge of anything like this. It would be a blessing to have children, and I know when its meant, its meant. Its all on God's timing. But, on the other side, its all beginning to be questionable. Please respond! Thanks a bunch. God bless. — stork1 (posted on June 7, 2005)

Hi!
I know from others who have simply been on birthcontrole for a long time
that it at times does take a while to get pregnant. A friend of mine it
took her a year to get it all out of her system before she finally got
pregnant. It might not have anything to do with your WLS. It could simply be
the birth controle. I know most people have told me that their hormones are
better since having the surgery, but it might take you just time to get
everything sorted out, between the birth controle and the weight loss you
might just be going all wacky inside lol. Just give it some time and lots
of practice!! hehe. I bet things will eventually work themselves out. Just
be patient and if all else fails try the ovulation tests and use those to
help you get more accurate with when to practice.I honestly think that your
birthcontrole might take some time to get out of your system.Just give your
body some time to sort its self out.Good luck and I hope all goes well with
you!

You cycle can be completely crazy during & after excessive rapid
weightloss. It may take your body quite a while to adjust to the 'new you'
and a while for your hormones to even out. I'm going on three years out
and my cycles without BC are just getting more normal now. I too started
taking BC to regualte my cycles. Hang in there, give it time. You'll
probably be just fine!

I am not sure I understand if you want to get pregnant or not. If you
don't want to ask your doc to put you on the b/c patch. It regulates
things for us a lot better because it is absorbed through the skin not our
stomach. I am as regular as I ever was on the pill. give it a try.

Sorry for being specific --- I definitely want to get pregnant. Here's the
thing: 1) if I'm not on the pill, I'm not regular. If I'm not regular, I
dont know if or when I'm ovulating. 2) if I take the pills, then I am
regular, but I am also decreasing my chances of pregnancy. See my dilemma?
lol. Thanks, Kim.

I'm wondering if you're just being a little anxious and not giving nature a
chance to do it's thing...I know my primary explained to me when hubby and
I were ready to conceive, that it could take a healthy couple up to a
year/year and a half to conceive. I have always had wacky periods, in my
teens, through out my twenties and into my thirties...I had also stopped
the pill after about 18 months post op from surgery (I was afraid it was
going to make me gain weight, not because I was ready to have
children...with that we used other forms of birth control)...at anyrate, I
was 3+ yrs post RNY when we decided to go for it (I'm currently in my last
weeks/days of pregnancy and anxiously awaiting our little baby boy). It
took about 4 months once we did decide to go for it...but I also know that
it's really kinda quick...I was really anticipating about a year before I
started to get into the whole basal temperature, rhythem, doctor
intervention thing (although I did kinda glance over that kind of info.
obviously...in case). Check it out with your OB/Primary Doc...see what
advice they have for you...I have a feeling that it's just a matter of
time, patience and a li'l bedroom fun ;)....Take care.
