Question:
At 4 1/2 months post-up, still have chronic nausea and abdominal pain
My Nurse Practitioner tells me that this will get better, but at 4 1/2 months post-up, no one I've spoken with has experienced the chronic nausea and stomach pains, especially this far out. I still have to make sure water is warm, or at least luke warm, or I'll feel very nauseous. I also (fortunately, not daily) will feel like my food is backed up into my esophogus, its very unpleasant, and when this happens, it takes @1-2 hours to pass (sometimes, nauseous & dumping syndrome). This happens even after I've tried to "chew, chew, chew" and eat slowly. Sometimes even after just 2-3 bites. I'm happy about my weight loss, but just wonder if anyone can give me any other advise other than "it will get better." - thanks — Linda V. (posted on May 29, 2005)

Linda, It sounds to me like you might have a stricture which is a
tightening of the stoma from your pouch to the new intestine. Your surgeon
may need to check it out. Call him/her. Also it could be you are eating
too fast and backing up, etc. Remember the basics; small bites, chew,
chew, chew, and wait between bites. BTW I had strictures and had to be
stretched 3 times within my first 5 months post-op, so it's not so bad.

I am pre-op; if they have to do a stretch, how do they do it? Surgery
again? or what?

Hi. My name is Brenda and I am eight months post-op. I still have this
problem. Infact, I am having it right now. It's not an every day thing,
but I began realizing that my pain was from gas. I have started taking
mylanta gas which helps out a lot. The pain is in the upper portion of my
stomach and my back. It causes me to be very nautious and I eat very
little. This happens quite frequently, but it is something I have learned
to live with. I am 109 lbs thinner weighing in at 133. I will take the
bad with the good. I hope this has helped.

Hi Linda, I am 5 weeks post op and I have been doing the same thing since
week 2. Yesterday I took gas x and it seems like that is going to help me.
My food felt like it would get stuck in the back of my throat and I could
only hold a few bites. Then I would throw that up too. I tried the eating
slow and the chew chew chew and it still came back up. Since trying the
gas x it seems like the bloating is gone in my throat and downward. I have
not thrown up today at all thank God. I am still having trouble getting in
all my protein and water but I am trying. I hope this might help you.
Take care. Judy

Hi, I'm 20 months out and have had all of that and more since my RNY. I
have ulcers, where the pouch and intestine meet, I have had chronic
gastritis and HUGE constipation problems. You've gotten some really good
answers, I just thought I'd throw mine out too. I have a
condition called esophagual spasms and a hypertensive LES valve. They've
done lots of tests, I have narrowed it down to - for me- food
intolerances/allergies. You might want to pay really close attention to
what you eat and how you feel, that is IF you can get the nausea gone long
enough to do this. I really feel for you I know how you're suffering. My
surgeon refused to see me when the upper GI showed the ulcers. So I have
been going to one GI after another trying to get help. When I asked about
food "problems" they just look at me like I'm stupid (and I might
be but that doesn't give them the right to look at me like that!!!) LOL I
hope you find some answers soon.

Have you been scoped yet? How does water taste? If you have a marginal
ulcer, such as one poster, be sure to tell them you will need to increase
the dosage of meds because of your malabsorption. You certainly need to be
checked, since it's not normal for it to go on & on. A swallow is
something else & doesn't show an ulcer clearly. It would show a
narrowing, but the treatment is, you guessed it, a scope. Painless, as
you are on sleepy drugs for an hour or so. ANd if the opening has to be
dilated, it's done at the same time and you don't FEEL any different,
either way

Oh, and some ppl feel pain in their backs, rather than in front. Weird,
huh? From the ulcer, not the scope.

Hi, I am just about 4 months post op and am having the Same problems as
you! I am glad I found your question because I thought I was all alone in
this. I am still not eating solid food. I can eat yogurt, pudding and
cottage cheese. sometimes peanutbutter. I pretty much live on protien
shakes and bars. I still get pain after a bite or two of anything that is
animal protien. (even eggs) I too have been told it will get better, but I
do get frustrated also. The last couple of weeks I just ate the things I
knew I could handle and I think my stomach is finally calming down. I have
not vomited in two weeks and the nausea is much better. Stop trying so
hard would be my advice, let things calm down for a while. I wish you much
luck! Angela
