Question:
Has anyone had wls while suffering from a kidney disease?
I'm 23 years old and suffer from FSGS, kidney disease where I spill protein. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and was still okayed by surgeon to proceed with wls. I do not have diabetes or hypertension. Thanks — CocoaPA (posted on April 11, 2005)

Dear Cocoa,
Yes I have FSGS and also had the WLS in 2003. I still have my protein in
my urine and told the surgery would possibly help this condition. It has
been two years and a couple of months since surgery. I do have diabetes
and hypertension. I have lost around 80 lbs. and been at a stand-still
even with exercise. I'm depressed because I was promised to lose at least
130 lbs.. I have a saggy tummy and need plastic surgery. I am also 50
years old now. My surgery was very successful, (Open RNY). My scar healed
very nicely and really haven't had any problems except with the weight loss
status. My plateau has lasted about one year. You are a very young person
and everthing should be fine. Just make sure this is really what you want.
My protein is higher than when I had my surgery. Good luck and hope this
helped alittle.

Thanks for responding, the type of surgery i want to have is the ds, but
i'm thinking of having the first part done, which would just entail
reducing my stomach size and then having the intestinal part done later,
after treatment for the fsgs...i hope that things improve with u and you
are able to reach your goal weight, thanks again for responding, i really
appreciate the fact that i'm not alone in wanting to have wls while having
a kidney issue...
