Question:
B12 shots and other vitamins

My doctor prescribed my b12 along with actigall last week. When I went to pick up my prescription they told me that my doctor did not say I needed needles and that he would have to call it in. I called the office the next day and they said they would call it in but never did. I have been getting the run around and on top of that they never told me let along show me how to do it. I am feeling neglected and Dont know where else to turn. He is the only surgeon in my town who does the surgery. Any ideas?? maybe my PCP?    — srtchick (posted on October 4, 2004)

Drop by the office:) Its easy to ignore folks on the phone, but a living breathing standing there body is kinda different:):) Be nice but be firm your not leaving without prescription and instructions.... This should get them moving. let us know what happens.

Your PCP could even give you the shots; mine does. Or if you have a friend (nurse) they could do it at home for you... I would definiatly go to the surgeons OFFICE to get the prescription for the 'needles'.!

I didn't look to see where you are located, but I can just go to the CVS here and get some needles without a prescription. Don't know why you would need one. Heck they normally pass out needles at the health department (I used to work there) to drug addicts so they don't have to worry about using infected needles. This shouldn't be that big of a deal. Hope you get this fixed. p.s. My husband and best friend give me my shot once a month, no biggie. Good luck!

Ya, you don't need a scrip for needles. Unless they are wanting to know what size you need, I don't see why they wouldn't sell them. Anyone else find it funny that a pharmacy would fill an order for injectable B-12 and then question the need for needles?

Depending upon what state you live in you may or may not need a prescription for the needles. Call a pharmacist and ask. In Maryland and Virginia, we've always had to get prescriptions for needles. When I lived in Arkansas, I didn't have to.

After reading the last post, she does have a point. However, I live in Florida too and have purchased needles here without problem.

As others have said here, you do NOT need a perscription for syringes. The only reason you might want one is for your insurance company to help defray the cost. I buy a box of 100 syringes and there is only about a $5 difference in paying full price and my cost share.

You do need a scrip in some states for needles. I believe NY is one of them.

Do not need Rx in WA state, but if you have one, there is no sales tax. Surprise note, though. With Rx, there is a minimum charge (at my pharmacy), with OTC, there is none. I could buy just one for .25, if I chose.
