Question:
How many fat grams allowed daily?
If someone could help me I'd be very appreciative. I've been counting carbs for a year now, my surgery date was 9/10/03 and I've done very well, but I'm REALLY becoming burned out. I thought for the last 20 pounds to hit goal I'd switch to low fat, even if it takes a year to reach. My problem is I don't know how many fat grams to allow each day. I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance..Nancy — nancysho (posted on September 8, 2004)

I was told never to exceed 20 grams of fat per day.

If you are BPD or RNY, fat is not particularly the enemy. SUGAR is the
enemy. You were wise to be counting carbs, but not all carbs are evil.
Sugar does nothing for us but put on wt, but some nuts, grains, seeds,
veggies and such are useful to us. We malabsorb some fats & oils, so
that's not as critical, as long as you are reasonable.

My surgeon said not to worry about fat, just carbs. That being said, pre-op
when I've followed low-fat diets, I would stay at 20-25g per day. But, my
hairdresser said that was too low since my hair and nails were drying out.
Plus I was always HUNGRY.

I too am working on the last few pounds to get to goal so I started the
South Beach diet this week. The emphasis there is on healthy fat which we
all need. I don't count fat grams or carbs or anything else for that
matter but I do make sure I eat very lean meats, trim off all visible fat,
make my own salad dressing using olive oil, etc. I've cut out all
saturated fat and anything that has trans fats and use only mono-saturated
or vegetable oils. I'd recommend you take a look at the South Beach diet.
I've seen many many posts on this web site praising it as a good way to get
off the last few pounds and a plan to live with forever.
