Question:
I need to have a hernia repair and tummy tuck how can I get insurance to cover

I was told by the Dr. that performed my GBS that he could repair my hernia and do my tummy tuck at the same time and my insurance would cover it. However; For many reasons I prefer not to use this dr. again. Hopefully someone has had the same issue and can help me figure out how to get both done thru ins..    — loisph (posted on August 28, 2004)

I dont blame you. I wouldnt want my WLS to do my TT - any more than I would have wanted my PS to do my WLS. Check your insurance for their guidelines, most require the excess skin to be hanging and rashs... In fact, when I had my TT/hernia repair; I had two surgeons; one for the hernia and then the PS for the TT.

My PS waas the one who found what he thought was a hernia when I went for my consult. He was going to do both surgeries. Turned out when he got in there, there was no hernia, justg extreemely stretched muscles. Anyway, the insurance company has really no choice but to pay to repair the hernia. The TT is a little more involved to get covered. Most PS know how to go about getting approval from the insurance companies, but you can add to it by having all your Drs. document any related discomfort or conditions, ie. back pain, irritations, etc.. Also, take pictures to send in with the PS pictures, illustrating the rashes or hanging skin. I held mine in my hands, making it look as gross and distorted as was possible. Be sure to date your pictures. This was commented on by the Dr. that reviewed my case externally after I was denied twice from my insurance company. I also had letters from my PCP, dermatolgist, WLS and PS. Every bit helps, and be persistant. One comment made by my PS was, that if these insurance companies cover WLS, the would be stupid not to realize that the excess skin is a by product of it, and should there4fore finish the job. Good luck!!!

I completely understand your reasoning. I want a plastic surgeon to do my TT etc. If anyone asks just say "I went to my GBP doc because he was well known for the GBP. I am going to a PLASTIC SURGEON for my PS!" i have more reasons than that to not go to the GBP surgeon but really, think about it. ANy PS worth his salts can get his procedures approved by insurance, if yours doesn't seem to want to try- I would go to a different PS! Geraldine 10/27/03 304/150/150
