Question:
Is anyone else experiening memory loss
I am 15 months out. I am on a local list and 1 year out list any MANY of us are experiencing memory loss. It is affecting my job and I am concerned . There is some speculation it could be a vitamin deficiency. Anyone else hear this or have any thoughts .... that they remember — Gail O. (posted on July 28, 2004)

Make sure your B12 levels are in the appropriate levels.

This is an interesting question as I've experienced this since about 2
years post-op. I've started taking ginko. I figured it was just early
menopause or maybe depression. I get my labs done regularly and nothing
looks out of whack. Hmmmmm....

The B group of vitamins is nothing to mess with. Recently there has been
discussion of B1/thiamin deficiency in post WLS pateints. Seems we don't
eat enough of the things fortified with thiamin. It's not just B12 that's
important!

As many others have suggested, you should probably have your labs checked.
But, know that a LACK of carbohydrates causes the brain to malfunction.
Your brain, heart and lungs prefer to burn carbohydrate fuel, and your
brain absolutely requires it to function optimally. If you are on a
severly-carbohydrate-limited diet, you might start there. I'm not
advocating simple carbohydrates--stay away from refined carbs like white
bread, pasta, potatoes, sugar and junk food, but DO eat complex
carbohydrates like vegetables, whole grains and fruits. Your body
absolutely requires some. So, if you've been on an almost
exclusively-protein and fat diet, immediately add some healthy carbs while
you're waiting for the labs to come back, and see if you feel better.

Hi Gail, from personal experience, I would say that Vespa has probably hit
the nail on the head. Early post-op when I could only eat protein because I
didn't have enough room for anything else, I couldn't focus on my work or
remember what I needed to remember to do my job. It took about 3 to 4
months for me to feel back to normal. I've always had a really really good
memory and it bothered me a lot that I had to write everything down so was
glad to get back to normal. Normalcy did seem to return at about the same
time I was able to introduce salads, veggies, fruits into my diet. Haven't
noticed any problems since then and I'm 10 months out now.

Gail, I don't know if this pertains to you but I thought I would just
mention that I was experiencing some severe memory loss and it freaked me
out and I went to see my M.D. right away. He said it was possibley my
anti-depressent Wellbutrin XL. It's a vary rare side effect of the drug. As
soon as I stopped taking it the memory loss was no longer a problem. Just a
little info. Not sure it pertains but good luck and see your doctor.
