Question:
Antibiotics and yeast infections

I started taking Flagyl for an on going stomach problem hoping it is a bacterial problem. I will be on it for a few months...I have had extreme bloating and constipation for two years and have tried everything. I want to wait this out to see if Flagyl will help but two weeks after I started it I got a yeast infection.I got a cream and used it and today I feel it coming back. Will it never go away while I'm taking the antibiotic? I am also taking a good probiotic. My husband is going to be home for the first time in three months tonight,he works at sea. I hate the fact that I am dealing with this! Any quick fixs?    — Vel K. (posted on July 22, 2004)

There is hope! Call your Doctor and ask for a perscription for Diflucan (sp?). It is the miracle cure! Whenever a Doctor perscribes an antibiotic I automatically get a scrip for diflucan too. Usually 1 pill each week for 2 weeks works for me, though they usually give me a 4 week dose. Good Luck!

Yoy can minimize your chances by taking Acidopholous with you medicine. You can get it in any GNC or Vitamine Shoppe. Some drug store are even carrying it now. Spend the few extra dollars for the one you have to pit in the frige- it's worth it.

Flagyl is diflucan so don't call the doctor and ask for a prescription fot it. Flagyl is usually given for a yeast infection. It is an antifungal, not an antibiotic. If you have a vaginal infection while on flagyl it is not yeast. It is probably H gardinella which is bacterial. Call your doctor, if you have a separate Gyn doc call that one. He/dhe will give you what you need. The over the counter stuff is for yeast, not the H gardinella. Call today so you don't have to suffer the symptoms of the infection any longer and good luck.

I'd like to clear up a little misinformation. Flagyl is not diflucan. Flagyl is metronidazole which IS an antibacterial medicine. Diflucan is fluconazole which is an antifungal (antiyeast)medicine. As you know, being on an antibacterial medicine will frequently also kill the good bacteria in your system (in this case your vagina) which allows for the overgrowth of yeast. I would recommend asking for the diflucan prescription to see if it will help. Also, eat lotas and lots of yogurt and maybe some acidophilous to help restore the normal flora in your system. Good luck!! Shelley
