Question:
WARNING: I just had PS on Monday and Dr told me to take some Magnesium Citrate

because I hadn't had a BM. I had MAJOR DUMPING, something I have only had 2 times since my surgery over a year ago. I didn't throw up (or poop), but nearly passed out, very light headed and a cold sweat that soak my whole body. Called baratric surgeon and nurse said that is a no no for us, way to strong, and I can vouch for that!    — Gail O. (posted on June 18, 2004)

I have taken it several times since surgery for severe constipation, with no problems. I guess everyone is different. I am 2 1/2 years post op.

I worked a lot of years in a cardiac stepdown unit, and when our patients had constipation problems (which was frequent, since we used to give them a lot of iron after surgery), If milk of magnesia didn't work, often Citrate of Magnesia was given. BUT - we only had them take 1/2 a bottle in the evening, and if it didn't work, take the other half in the morning. That stuff is pretty powerful and can be really rough - whether you dump on it or not.

ohhhhhhhhh i feel for you!i went thur the same thing! i had a tummy tuck, hernia repair and inner thigh lift. because of the pain meds that i took, i didn't go poop for 1 1/2 weeks! i thought i was going to die. ask your ps if he can give you something different in the pain med department. most pain meds will cause constipation. nothing helped untill i stopped taking the pain meds. i even did 2 fleets. i was in such bad shape. incisions everywhere and couldn't poop. i wouldn't have wished that on anybody. good luck and i hope everything comes out alright hahaha sorry couldn't help that one hahhaa

I have to use magnesium citrate in pill form daily (400 to 800 mg) because I have a magnesium deficiency. It is helpful with the bowels. I am assuming that you are referring to taking the liquid that they use to clean you out? That can be rather nasty on the body and I have responded as you indicate pre-WLS surgery to that darned stuff. I do agree that it is probably an individual reaction. Sandra
