Question:
Is a NISSEN an automatic disqualifier for REVISION WLS?
I had a vbg in 1999. I'm wanting a revision, but my new surgeon was quite dismayed today when he realized that I had had a Nissen procedure done along with the VBG. I am so depressed. He says that he "may" not be able to re-operate on my stomach. He'll wait for Upper GI results, and he wants to see the size of my pouch. — Adrienne T. (posted on April 5, 2004)

Hello. I guess I am in similar situation (almost) because I too had the
Nissen (not sure if mine was a full or partial wrap...waiting to get the
info from the doctor's office because he has since retired). But I have
heard from several doctors it is able to be taken down and then the wls
surgery to occur. So I am still hoping to have the wls surgery. Dont give
up just yet :)

No, the Nissan is not an automatic disqualifier but it does make the
revision more "technically challenging" as my surgeon Dr. Carlos
Ferrari told me. I had VBG w/Nissan in Sept 97 and was revised to RNY in
5/00. It can be done but make sure you have a surgeon who is experienced
in it. I had to obtain my surgical report from the VBG and Dr. Ferrari
scoped me prior to the revision so he could see for himself what he was
going to be operating on. Best thing I ever did! Good luck and don't give
up hope!
