Question:
Has anyone not made it to their doctors goal weight ?
Has anyone not made it to their doctors goal weigh by theor 1 year check up? I have my 1 year check up tomorrow and I am not at the goal weight the doctor set for me. I am about 13#'s above. I am not even at the goal weight I set for myself which is about 6#'s lighter than I am. I have been at the same weight for about 4 months and have not lost a pound no matter what I do-increase exercise-change foods-eat more- eat less. I think I am done losing. I am very satisfied at the weight I am at-however feel alittle like a failure. Just wondering if anyone has been here. 252/156/144 — Jan S. (posted on April 1, 2004)

It took me 15 months to "arrive" and another coupla months to
stabilize. Cut yourself a little slack. We can't stop these things on a
dime, ya know? Deep breath.

Same here. Im 17 months out and havent really lost anything (up and down
same 5 pounds)in 7 months. I did quit smoking on my one year anniversary. I
thought that was the part of the problem but now I really dont think it is.
I am going to weight watchers now to at least try and maintain. I do feel
great (274/180) but am definately not in that size 8 Ive dreamed of (hell
10 sounds good now) im in a 14. Who knows maybe something will give. Good
luck to us both!!! Marilayne

According to statistics, success is 70% of your excess weight lost. You
seem to have done that and your BMI is in the normal range. I think you've
done wonderfully!

Most people do not make it to their doctors goal weight if it is a weight
chart weight. You can totally make it to whatever weight you want to but it
takes a lot of hard work to get those last 10 or so pounds off. I have 6
pounds to my original goal but am already at a size 6 so if I don't make it
I will live. It took 2.5 months for me to lose the last 10 pounds so just
be patient. You now have to think of yourself as a girl who needs to lose
13 pounds instead of one who needs to lose 100+. That is a cool thought
huh?

Oh honey, I wouldn't call going from 252 to 144 a failure! On the
contrary-you have been a great success!! Just keep at it and follow the
rules. You need to think positively--you've done great!

Doctors have no business setting goal weights for their patients. There
are too many individual factors for them to play God like that, and they're
setting their patients up for feelings of failure if they don't make the
"chart weight." And within 1 year? Why 1 year? Isn't that
unrealistic? That said, is your own goal weight realistic? Have you been
that weight before, and what factors made you chose that number? Try
setting smaller goals for yourself, and when you surpass them, celebrate
your success. Failure is an F-word that should not be in our vocabularies.

You know, neither my surgeon nor my PCP ever mentioned a specific goal
weight. I had one I picked myself. I lamented to my PCP that I was still 40
lbs from my personal goal. He said, "That's fine if you get there, but
I am satisfied with where you are. You have made positive lifestyle
changes and all your labs and your blood pressure look good." I am off
most of my prescription drugs and am much healthier than before surgery.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - suucessful weight loss surgery
is not necessarily measured by the scale.

Don't worry about your doctor's goal weight. I saw on your profile that
you have a normal BMI, so I don't know what chart he's looking at! Some of
those are just too low for formerly MO people. Do you feel good? Are you
healthy? It's up to you to decide, and it looks like you've done just
great!!

I started at 386 and made it down to 210, but that is as low as I got. I
am now 225, which the doctor said is normal, to gain back some weight after
you stabilized. But I can't help but be disappointed. The doctor never
told me what I should weigh, but privately I hoped to make it to 175. I am
so far from that goal that I wonder if it was ever realistic. I am a size
18, which was a dream I thought I could never achieve when I was a size 54.
I wish I could have gotten under 200. Still, I feel really good, so I
just try to keep that in mind. I can walk, I don't sweat at all any more,
not even in the summer unless it is 90 degrees, I can bend and move and do
all the things that our 'normal' friends take for granted. So, while I
especially can relate to your worries about not reaching your goal weight,
I have to tell you that if you don't, you will still be just fine.

Jan, hon don't stress about this. Just look how far you have come. Say 2
years ago, did you, in your wildest dreams believe you would be weighing
156??!! Remember that state of mind and health are so much more important.
When my doctor asked me what my personal goal weight was I told him it
wasn't a weight it was a feeling I wanted to achieve. Well..........I have
reached that feeling. I have energy, I feel good, I am in better spirits
and more confident, oh, and I am off all medications. Be a little kinder
to yourself and remember that this tool was to help you acheive a more
"Normal" life and worrying about weather or not you can lose that
last 12 pounds should not take away from the feeling of achievement you
should have. I say "WAY TO GO GIRL" "YOU HAVE DONE
BEAUTIFULLY"

Please do not be down on yourself. You are at the weight you should be.
Your body will tell you what weight you should be at and it has. Good for
you! You need to have a heart to heart talk with your Doctor and let him
know that this is it. You are healthy and happy and that is all that
matters. If you have to prove to your doctor, keep a food and exercise
record so that you can prove to him you are doing your best. Congrats!

Why are you worried about the year out when the surgery takes 18 mos to 2
years or even more to get the weight off some people?
