Question:
Is it ok to use hydrocodone pre-op?
My surgery is 2/23. Right now I am having terrible menstrual cramps and can't take Ibuprofen this close to surgery. Tylenol is totally ineffective for me. I have some left over hydrocodone from dental surgery and was wondering if anyone here knew if this was ok to take. I can't ask my Dr. or surgeon as they are both out of the office right now. Please if anybody knows for sure respond as soon as possible as I am really in a lot of pain. I would appreciate it very much. Thanks! — Erin N. (posted on February 18, 2004)

I use it occassionaly. HOWEVER whenever I use pain meds, I ALWAYS have to
eat with them, AND I take something like Nexium or Pepsid with it too.

I guess what I am wanting to know is this-Will taking hydrocodone this
close to surgery affect the surgery negatively in any way? I have never had
surgery before and I am afraid to do something that would jeopardize it. I
know I am probably being overly cautious but I am a little nervous about
not making it through. Thanks again.

I can only tell you that I was still taking it from foot surgery when I had
another (non-WLS) surgery. I did point it out to all concerned, and no one,
including anesthesia batted an eye.

You should really ask your surgeon what he prefers. They are all different.

I have terrible menstrual cramps every month! So bad, in fact, that I miss
work and other social activities. I asked my doctor for some PAIN
medication instead of the regular anti-inflammatories that they usually
prescribe for menstrual cramps. She gave me some hydrocodone. It did not
work. It might not even help your cramps. Just something to think about.
You never know.
