Question:
HELP? Rought week of not getting food down
Hello all, I am 5 weeks post-op and on the soft foods diet. I have had a really rough week this week with not getting much of anything down without it either coming back up, or nausea. Even trying to drink the recommended 64oz. of water has been hard. Have others experienced this? Are there any recommendations on what to eat, or how to stop nausea? Thanks! — jennashinners (posted on January 25, 2004)

Jennifer,
You may have a stricture. Please call your surgeon, a stricture is easly
repaired.
Good Luck!!

Of course you will be asked
1)are you eating too fast
2)are you chewing your food good.
If niether of these are the problem and if you are having trouble with
water I doubt it. Sounds like a stricture I had the identical problems you
describe. Please insist on having the scope done to get it corrected, don't
torture yourself any longer than necessary or get dehydrated. See my
profile for any more on the Dreaded Stricture!

I just had this same problem - it started about 4 weeks out. Slowly over a
matter of days the amount I was able to get in decreased to the point where
I was throwing up most anything and was full for long periods of time. I
had a stricture. They put a scope down my throat and used a balloon to
open up my stoma. Not painless, but not aweful either. Since then (last
week) I feel like i have a new lease on life! I was getting dehydrated
before. Now I feel great! Call you doctor!! Good Luck!

My husband had something similiar about 4 weeks post op - nausea, decreased
intake and got to the point he was having almost constant dry heaves. The
surgeon did and endoscopy and found an ulcer. Call your doctor!

Yes Jennifer, I had the same problem and survived on getting maybe 1-3
spoons of liquid food a day - some days I sipped water and a protein drink
all day - I'm now 56 days Post-Ops - almost 8 weeks and this is the first
week I actually ate white meat from fish - each day is better than the next
- and everyone has a different tolerance - so I suggest you keep your meals
watery - like soups w/o the meat - (Homemade is the best) - mashed baby
carrots, mashed potatos - but I'm talking about a few spoons each meal. I
can now drink about 1-1/2 liters of water - and I did drink Vitamin water
even though the actual nutrients might not have been ingested. Good Luck -
and don't panic - of course, it is always best to check with your doctor
and Nutritionist!
