Question:
Really need some encouragement, Dr. THrew me a loop about loss
I talked to my surgeon today to ask him if I had proximal RNY, he said yes and that I had 75 cm bypassed. I told him that I had started at 261 the day of surgery, OCtober 7, 2003 and that I was now at 209, for a loss of 52 pounds. He told me that was above normal loss for 3 months out and I was doing good. I told him I wanted to get to 150, he told me he felt like I could, but it would take about 2 YEARS to reach that! I am FREAKING OUT BIG TIME!!!! Please let me hear from you! Kim — KIM B. (posted on January 9, 2004)

Kim, I know eveyones weight loss journey is different but I wouldn't worry
about what your doctor said about a time table. I started out at 283 and I
am 5'5". I reached my goal of 150 lbs. in about 11 months.BUT... even
if it would have taken 2 years, just knowing that I am never going back
there, would make it worth it to me. I'm sure you will do great! Take care.

Congratulations on your weight loss, thus far! That's Great!
I've seen and heard of many that just had 75 cm bypassed and lost their
weight in less than 2 years.
Do you exercise and eat/drink as you should? Focus on those areas. I
promise you will loose, if you set this goal and stick to it. How bad do
you want it? Work your tool. Get the max from this surgery and keep it off
by wanting and staying positive about living the rest of your life healthy.
Good Luck!

I think he was being conservative to not disapoint you. I think you'll
lose it in a year. You have plenty of time and should use it so you have
time to sculpt your body with exercise as you lose.

A friend of mine also had 75cm bypassed, started at 270 or so, and in less
than a year was down to 130's...I wouldn't freak out. If you follow all
the pouch rules, keep up the exercise, small meals, mostly protein, lots of
water, you should reach your goal in much less than 2 years...

The day of my surgery I weighed 282 and thought I would be at goal in 1
year. I am now 11 months out and I weigh 175, I think that your doctor is
being realistic! But just think how exciting it will be if you reach your
goal in a year and can prove him wrong!!! Hang in there 1 or 2 years
however long it takes, I just keep telling myself it took YEARS to get this
big!

I started out at 228.6. had rny in feb, 2003 so i am nearly a year out.
My doctor told me about 150 was where I would end up. I said, I want to
get to 140 and he said you might eventually with a lot of hard work. Well,
I am 127-130 which is just right and still losing. So they are wrong
sometimes. Don't be discouraged.

I started at 260 and was down less than you at the same time. I got down to
148 in my 15 month.(I'm almost 4 years and maintaining) Unless he has a
crystal ball he doesn't know and shouldn't be telling you that. Everyone
loses different and there is NO way of predicting what each will do. You're
doing GREAT!! Best of Luck!

You're in charge of how fast and how much you lose.. not your doctor -- he
did the mechanical part, the rest is up to you. My guess is you could get
to where you want to be fairly quickly.. do you exercise? What do you eat?
Drink water? Lots of lean protein? If you're doing the right things,
you'll lose the weight. Your doctor can't make any predictions, because
we're all different. My doctor told me I'd be wearing a size 16 -- I'm
sure he wanted to make sure that he didn't set me up to feel like a
failure. He asked me the other day what size pants I had on and I said...
"I never thought you'd ask -- size 10!" Don't listen to him, he's
a mechanic -- the fine tuning and details are without your power! Good
luck!
